Look, we all know that one of the Voyagers is going to roam into Klingon space and get shot down for target practice in the 23rd century.

I almost laughed when I saw the "fair and balanced" in the corner of the fox news website.

Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
Luckily, there isn't a lot to be biased about in this story. There is a hole in the Earth, and it's messing things up. Period. As it turns out, FOX is giving this the most coverage of any other agency/network (that I can see), so I'm thankful for the updates. Speaking of updates: it's getting worse, and nothing is likely to be tried again for a week or two - and there isn't a whole lot of promise to that either.BoxeD wrote:I almost laughed when I saw the "fair and balanced" in the corner of the fox news website.

I'm surprised there has been no real coverage of this in swedish news. They've mentioned there's an oil leak.
Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

Wow, you're a real, unabashed dick, Liz. Many people do care who Lena Horne was and that she died—two attributes, among several others (such as grace, class, and her contributions and worth to society), that already have and surely will ultimately prove to distinguish her from you.

Okay.
But the topic is about something else, so lets go ontopic.

Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
I was at a meeting of engineers last night, and heard from a fellow that's friends with a senior engineer at BP. He (the senior engineer) says that this really isn't their fault. Apparently since the explosion in 2006, as a company they've been very safety driven. However, due to the sub-contracting with Transocean (who owned the rig) they were not in direct control. It seems more like BP is being made out to be the bad guy here while those responsible are getting away scot-free. It's very difficult to place where blame actually lies in this situation. All we can see though is that at least BP are trying to fix things, even if they're not directly culpable.

Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
Except that they haven't been safety-driven. Maybe the pencil-pushers have, but in the places actual work gets done, they're still barely scraping by.
Remember they're local news around here, so local news stations have gone back quite a few times to check on them and keep finding failures to correct the problems that led to the explosion in Texas City.
I'll believe that they've attempted to put a veneer of safety onto their operations, but its otherwise business as usual.
Even so, they're responsible for the screwup even if they're not culpable. The sub-contractor is also responsible for it, if they are culpable. Exactly who pays what will probably depend on the contract and may need to be settled in court. It's good that BP has stepped up to the plate to deal with it rather than wait on a judge to order them to.

Here are a few pictures and videos of the leak from underwater http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/05 ... -video.php I got the link from Digg, so no comments about treehugging.

You've gone too far, turn back!

Gulf Disaster
Live updates, lots of resources. Yes, the host site is environmentalist. ("Breaking News" is 'straight' news outlets. Also links to NOAA.)
Tank, are you surprised that one of the suits at BP is trying to skirt the blame? Like the bankers and stock traders who said, "hey this was a perfect storm, we couldn't have seen it coming. Not our fault. Blame it on poor people." Bullshit. This stuff happens because of the myth—no, make that lie—of corporate "self-regulation."

I wouldn't say it's skirting the blame exactly, it's more like pointing out that the issue is much more complex than we're giving it credit for.
