Yeah, I hosted those, and am in-between servers as noted above.

Brackets up:

We are still looking for another US server to replace the 2nd AoT server (listed as ToA).

I'm a 17 year old student in high school. Paying for a vps was getting too expensive and not rewarding at all as it was only used once a month. I just waited for it to expire 2 weeks ago.

Glad to see your hosting a Ladle server, DLH. From what Arilou told me of your current hosting choice, I am hoping that it works out to be a permanently great server for future ladles.

Just a reminder...

SERVER ADMINS please UPDATE your SERVERS.

 Especially you, PRU, with your "Ladle 43" server name, haha.

Remember, there have been slight changes to the ladle.cfg and we want to make sure it get propagated. Thanks for your effort guys!

This has been a public service announcement from the Ladle committee that actually doesn't exist, but you should listen to and follow anyway.

Last request of an additional US server. We could really use one to replace the 2nd AoT server. Just sayin'. I'm pretty sure we are out of options at this point, but I thought I would ask anyway. Let's keep our eyes on a solution for next month. I really wish more people wanted to spend a little cash for some server hosting. Seems like we could do better. Are all the big-spenders playing High Rubber? Because they have dozens of servers and we have hardly any for Fortress, the biggest tournament in Arma. Seriously?

I looked back into hosting last night and could really never find a VPS with good specs for a really low price. It just isn't worth $15-$50 a month for a 1-time used server. I will probably go back into hosting if I make SP to use the vps to host a clan server.

But it really isn't worth the money to be used once a month.
What else in comparison to tron could a vps be used for? If I were to put up some test servers for fortress settings testing, not too many people will join as it does not have that "big name". Also, I could simply locally host a test server.

I have the money, I just don't want to spend it on a tron server once a month.

That's a very good question man. I wonder if we should make a topic/split this to address this situation? It seems like the majority of Fortress players will only be found in a small handful of servers at any given time. That's fine, but those aren't even the servers we use for competition (except for CT MBX and uNk). Why? Can we get the popular sumo servers converted for Ladles?

You have to admit it's pretty odd that out of 100+ players we can't come up with 8 reliable servers every month.

So what are possible solutions? INW, you say it's not worth $15-$50 to use something once a month. I agree. But how about $1 a month? Maybe gene was on to something when he posted on the Wager Tournament thread. Servers could be used as repros. And what if there was an annual Fortress donation drive? Think about 100 players donating $5 a year. What kind of servers could we get with that?

And donations drives aren't the only option. Recently I did some graphics work for someone I met through Armagetron. Rather than taking payment, I had the person donate to Armagetron instead. This stimulates the community financially. Last year apparition made a marketplace thread. I think Word even made a 3D modeling thread once. The way I see it, if we help each other out (which we all do on occasion) maybe we can turn that into revenue to benefit the community?

I noticed Titanoboa and epsy had quite a long "tech support" session on IRC last night. This is the perfect opportunity for the exchange of appreciation. Titan could volunteer a few euros for help and epsy could pass that right back to the community in the form of a donation to whatever department he saw fit (this assumes we set up different areas of need). See where I'm going with this? If we think creatively and turn our appreciation into currency, however small, we reach goals. (This is the point where 2020 steps in and says "I told you so," haha.)

Anyway, food for thought.

The problem with these drives or donations rather, is who does it go to? Is Z-Man the community? Do we all give him the donations to host various servers for tournaments? Most other games are million dollar companies who have their own servers paid by the users.

OK, so armagetron users give a dollar or so for some really nice servers, but who does the money go to? Various server owners? I love the idea, there is a lot of work that needs to be put into it, but the outcome would be very good.

I've got a separate question.
How do the master servers relate to server stability, lag, performance, etc...?
Does the location of the master servers affect this or do the machines the master servers are hosted on affect this?
Basically, what is the purpose of the master servers in correlation to their location and a server's location?
Does the master server just list servers and has no connection to the actual quality of the server?

That. And the master servers aren't really under too much load, hosting them is essentially free.
