I think this has also been discussed before (sorry for being *that guy*), I remember making a picture of a scheme which showed how to go from 8 teams to 16, and it was pretty generalizable to even more teams. Basically every time you need to add an extra round you start of by giving the lowest ranked teams (based on seedings or random placement) an extra opponent first.

Code: Select all

1 team:

team 1

2 teams:

team 1
team 2

4 teams:

team 1
team 4

team 2
team 3

8 teams:

team 1
team 8

team 4
team 5

team 2
team 7

team 3
team 6

16 teams:

team 1
team 16

team 8
team 9

team 4
team 13

team 5
team 12

team 2
team 15

team 7
team 10

team 3
team 14

team 6
team 11

32 teams:

team 1
team 32

team 16
team 17

team 8
team 25

team 9
team 24

team 4
team 29

team 13
team 20

team 5
team 28

team 12
team 21

team 2
team 31

team 15
team 18

team 7
team 26

team 10
team 23

team 3
team 30

team 14
team 19

team 6
team 27

team 11
team 22

etc.
Of course if there aren't exactly 32 teams you replace the remaining teams with byes.
I'm pretty sure we already do this this way

edit: I *think* if you pick seeds in a similar way (winner = 1, runner up = 2, semifinal loser against 1 = 3, loser against 2 = 4, quarter loser to 1 = 5, loser to 2 = 6 etc.) you will get the same perk of not facing the team you lost to before you faced them in the previous tournament.

@lacka So let me make sure I have this straight. Let's say 20 teams sign up for a ladle, only 10 of which participated in the last ladle, but there were 12 participants in the last ladle. The two teams that are missing from the last ladle are the winners and something like 7th place. So do the placings of last ladle work like this?

2nd place -> team 1
3rd -> team 2
4th -> team 3
5th -> team 4
6th -> team 5
8th -> team 6
9th -> team 7
10th -> team 8
11th -> team 9
12th -> team 10

Then the new teams that signup get randomized and take teams 11-20. Then the byes fill teams 21-32.

That could work. Me likey.

Note: For a second I thought about the possibility of teams that came in last place in the last ladle wanting to create a "new" team, to better their chances, but then they would just end up in a lower position, and face the "harder" teams first :)
