Re: Ladle 30
I have it working and have tried viewing it a few times. It doesn't work that well. I am wondering how stable the recording is actually supposed to be though. Whenever I attempt to jump around the grid looking at other players, it craps out saying something about problems with connections.Concord wrote:has a mac user gotten the plus vs sp recordings to work yet?

Re: Ladle 30
Concord, I'm on a mac and I recorded Z-Man's recording (the youtube ones), so obviously, yes.

Re: Ladle 30

Re: Ladle 30
Does anyone know exactly when the hiding defense was first used? Psyko said today that he or Fofo were the first to use it in Ladle 26/27 or something like that. Hiding behind your tail is definitely nothing new, but what do the old fogies have to say about that?
Re: Ladle 30
Ladle 26 I used what is known as the "step defense". Curb and FoFo are also known to use this defense before Ladle 26. I told you this but still you misquoted me, thx.
The whole point to defense is to "hide" behind your tail. If you aren't able to do this, you are a bad defender.

Re: Ladle 30
Sorry bro, I don't think I misquoted you since I didn't quote anything. I said you said something like something or other and what I actually wanted to know (from someone who might have been there) is when that "step" defense was first used. Has it been around since the beginning or what?
I didn't ask about what makes a good defender either, but that's actually not the "whole" point. <-- there I quoted you.
Go blue!

Re: Ladle 30
If you insert a false fact into a paraphrase, it's considered misquoting.
Hiding behind your tail is also different than the step defense that you are trying to refer to, everyone hides behind your tail (hence when I told you half of the defenders in Ladle 30 did that).
IMO, the Step defense's origins were Skip's defensive style which players such as GP Alien excelled at. The point of it is to confuse the offense by making a lot of zig zags and following your tail leaving a small gap. Usually there was a gap, however players at this stage of growth could not aim that well and most of the time got trapped. (We were noobs back then) Eventually this strategy died out because of player's growth in their ability to aim and squish the defender.
The "Speed Box" as I like to call it was the first well known and widely used defense. The key is to stay within your box grinding on all straight walls and play defense with speed. Every now and then you would have to make a knick in the defense to slow yourself down. Very difficult defense to get in because it would be hard for wings to get fast enough to penetrate. Sine.wav's defense is similar to this. This defense was my favorite to be honest because I felt I could be extremely aggressive. Gain speed and then break my own defense to trap a wing and then regain my composure as fast as possible. You can catch a lot of people off guard with it because people assume you are going to play it safe.
The combination of the two is the Step Defense, or the Diamond Defense. The key is to always make your knicks to the outside of the zone, thus if you slide you won't die and you have a less liklihood of get squished. If you always turn to the inside, you will eventually find yourself giving up more space because you are estimating how far you have to drive to the inside to mimmic (sp?) the previous knick. You can also make this defense your own. If you prefer more knicks, it will be harder to get into. Less knicks and you will have more speed to eventually close holes.

You consider it misquoting. I didn't mean to misquote you. By the time I wrote this I had forgotten your exact words. I didn't mean to make you look stupid or something.
I'm sorry I just couldn't read all that mess you just wrote because I don't know what you're talkin about. Maybe I don't know what def is.

Re: Ladle 30
They are the three main styles of defense in my mind in fortress history. Basically the point to outlining all three is because the Step Defense is a hybrid of the other two styles (Skip, Speed Box).
Re: Ladle 30
They seem like 2 totally different styles to me.Psyko wrote:IMO, the Step defense's origins were Skip's defensive style which players such as GP Alien excelled at.
Sagelord was the first one that i saw doing the step defense but i think he may have said he learnt it from Durka....does anybody know who started it?
Like Psyko sayz yes you're supposed to hide behind the tail to def. But the question is how much to hide. If the defender is overlapping the tail by 4-5 bike lengths then its close to impossible to make a cut i think, espeically when they are using the step def in conjunction.Appa wrote:Hiding behind your tail is definitely nothing new, but what do the old fogies have to say about that?
Re: Ladle 30
I had a defense similar to the step like 1 1/2 years ago, I basically went out like the first half of the step but instead of continuing out I went back in.
