admin abuse
Re: admin abuse
The entire concept of allowing the creator of the topic to "kick" posters from it seems entirely wrong. Perhaps if it was a private topic it would then make sense. However, as it is within this forum it just appears to be an attempt to remove views that disagree with one's own from the topic simply because they disagree; which seems more like a form of censorship to myself than anything practiced on the majority of forums elsewhere that simply use an 'administration' team comprising of multi-leveled moderators and admins to police topics. I realize that the point of such an item would, theoretically, be to remove "trolls" from the topic, but it would surprise me if it took more than 3 topics before it became abused.
It is sort of interesting how the two concepts that I came across within this topic both seem to mirror each other for problems. Each one would work within a slightly less than ideal world, but neither works within this current bubble of the population that is tron as it is viewed.
@dubstep
I don't mean to be offensive in any way, but it might be possible that you avoided it because you do not have a penis. The population of tron when it catches scent of a girl seems to go crazy and become strangely friendly.

Re: admin abuse
Actually, what 2020 is saying about a forum post is meant to be a smartarsed analogy.
Problem is, it's a poor, sloppy analogy. To be correct, it would be...
...and, as a point of fact, Tank has on numerous occasions edited or deleted people's posts (including mine), locked topics, and in a few instances banned people from the server altogether. And it's his right to do so, just as it's a server Admin's right to boot a player.
So, 2020's analogy fails miserably.
Code: Select all
Server Admins/Moderators : kicking players :: Forum topic-starter : kicking/deleting posts
Code: Select all
Server Admins/Moderators : kicking players :: Forum Administrator (Tank, in our case) : kicking/deleting posts
So, 2020's analogy fails miserably.

That's not true.. and besides, lots of people hate me

@Phytotron
thanks for the smartarsed defence to paladin's criticism
though of course you are wrong with your analogy
(check singular/plural correspondence : )
oh
and i am not for mob-rule etc
instead
i am specifically interested in how a random collective reaches consensus
(think: a random coming together of players for a game of football/arma without a referee/admin
the solution set is very small
and application will be truly pervasive and global
eg i just went to a conference yesterday
more open than usual with plenty of group discussions
but the conversion of conversation through collaboration to commitment was very poor indeed --
they were missing the initial grind at launch : )
@dubstep
i am merely speaking from experience
having introduced three people in person to this game
and by
in person
i mean i sat with them as they played
and played with/against them on the same grid
i put up a post somewhere else about the different learning curves
that is
just grinding centre is pretty simple
though it gets tricky wrt the split especially when one's position is shuffled around and one finds oneself in the middle
then there's the split timing too...
the next learning curve is to survive for a round:
all three players in their first hour of play managed to survive a round for a total of....
ONCE or TWICE
most players aren't used to this kind of learning curve
and hence
i commend orangenick's persistence
and i look forward to seeing him on the grid
as i said elsewhere
(and you panned it last time Phytotron so you don't have to repeat yourself here : )
some people see the depth of the game pretty quickly
and they are willing to invest the time and effort to improve their play
so that they can get to the level they are actively and enjoyably participating in this time-critical minimal team game --
best on the net!
and future-proof!
what more do you need

Re: admin abuse
Still, if the admins on here deemed it neccesary to delete/ban some posts/users then what would the problem be? Yes, its a bit extreme but they pay for this forum, they created the game for us, etc. We're lucky they did, but they are in complete control.
My issue is that this comparison is bs, if server admin wants to have a private match he can kick people, if server admin doesn't like someones nickname, he can do all the same. If you don't like it, pay for your own server and do a better job.
2020, do you REALLY think the learning curve is any different in other games? You fall on your face in online play almost everywhere, probably every day for a month, and then you get used to the gameplay and start learning how it works. The people who ragequit because they can't get through that? Well, their loss..

Re: admin abuse
I think the difference here is that Armagetron's controls and gameplay are fairly unique, and other then the other tron light cycle clones, not many games only use left and right 90 degree turns as your only moves. If you have played a shooter before then if you play a different shooter you already have the basics, point gun at enemy shoot enemy get points, same with racing, fighting, sports, etc you just have to figure out the controls and you have the basics. Not to mention that a lot of gameplay modes in arma have unwritten rules you are expected to know: grinding, defending, sweeping, how to respawn, the whole open closed thing people like to enforce now, i am sure there are more those are just the ones i can think of off the top of my head.Lizmatic wrote: 2020, do you REALLY think the learning curve is any different in other games? Also it takes a while to realize there is a lot more you can do with just your left and right turns then you first think. So if you are new and wander into a server that enforces these unwritten rules and no one actually helps you out and tells you then you are likely to be kicked. It is hard to learn when you keep getting kicked and have no idea why.
You've gone too far, turn back!
Re: admin abuse
This topic made me ROFL.
Getting down to business, here are the issues.
In this thread alone, you came up with 2 ridiculous ideas.
1.) "Killing off whole servers from the Master Server List." - My comment on this is that servers don't cause drama, it's the people in them that do. So if you have a problem with an admin in a certain server, report *said admin* to the Owner of the server. And if you have a problem with the Owner of the server, then just don't play in that server, simple as. There are about 100 servers on the master server list, not getting to play in one of them is not the end of the world. And as Liz or Phytotron (Whoever) stated earlier, most of the sumo and fort servers these days are just one clone after another.
2.) "Letting the thread creators have admin powers on their own topics" - My comment on this is that there would be no the point in having a moderator, much less an admin of the forums if we gave this power to the people. Keeping on top of the posts and drama in threads is the admin and moderators' jobs, not the regular people. After all that's what they are there for. Adminship and other similar powers are privileges, which are to be earned, not granted upon demand or registration. If you didn’t want people’s opinions on your post, then you shouldn’t have posted your complaint in a public forum. If you have the right to free speech, everyone else should have that right too. I’m sure you knew there would be people criticizing you for your silly accusations. Plus, I am doubtful that these little concepts of yours will ever become a reality anyway. And to be brutally honest, your mentality is one only on the level of personal gain from what I can see.
So all in all, I think you just need to get the hell over one unfortunate circumstance. If it was a private match or took place in a clan server, then the admin does not need a legitimate reason to boot you from the server. On top of that, you say you were using an alias, so that's your fault for not playing under your original grid name. TIP: READ THE SERVER INFO BEFORE YOU ENTER A SERVER! (Cannot stress that point enough these days.) You're just another person making a big deal out of nothing for a plea of attention. Despite what other the game junkies around here say, Tron is NOT life. You take the game too seriously. Finally, I think you play yourself off as too innocent; stop trying so hard. Enjoy!
Don’t think I could’ve made it any clearer than I just did and that was one damn good first post for me.
Regards.

Here's a tip Believe...The posts here are 95% of the time irrelevant. Live with it.
All I can say is why is the topic continuing? We already realized we need to quit whining. So, I suggest Tank locks this thread and we move on. (note, merely a suggestion.)
