i think we should play around with different numbers of players for different comps

12v12 could probably be sorted out in one match
20mins of mayhem
fun :)
No. Absolutely not. For me, that was awful. I was pinging 100 higher than normal and my FPS was significantly dropping.

Anything much bigger than 8v8 forces a very practical limitation. Regionality: i.e. You could reasonably do a 12v12 in a euro server for euros. Do one for Eastern US, one for Western US...But ladles include in any given match people from as far east as Russia, as far West as the West Coast of the United States. This has been one of the virtues of the Ladle, but when you go bigger than 6 v 6 in this scenario, somebody pays the price of not being able to deal with major fps drops.
Armagetron: It's a video game that people should just play and enjoy :)

interesting @word
completely dense website
but it gives an idea of how corporate gaming tournaments work

we have the opportunity here to create a tron association
built by the players
for the players

money makes things heavy fast
so we need to have enough strength as a community to enable money flow without it breaking us...
hold the line

Lets do this for fall

heres my idea
Each month, each team is responsible for completing two matches. if the matches are not played, both teams are penalized. these matches can be played at anytime but must be in a FPL server. The server is only used for FPL, its locked down other times. The teams must notify league admins before the match is played, that it is being played. "Before" could mean irc 3 minutes beforehand, the league admin then unlocks the server for play. The server is only available for matches because there will be a full ladder of player statistics (ctwf style). Matches are 20 minute time limit, 7v7.

This addresses the problems of both a full on scheduled league and a 1 day event. Additionally spreading the competition over 3 months allows for some really good things.
Concurrent 1 day tournaments such as 1v1 Sumo, TST, Multimode, even Ladle if we so choose

Marketing. With a 1 day event you must hope to catch a new player's attention that day and hold it for a month. With a league they can follow along, spectate a couple matches, get involved as a fan, and improve the league. Spreading it over time allows us to do more with presentation, as well.

Development of competition over time. With a consistent player pool, one can see improvement and changes more clearly and accurately, Ladle to Ladle this isn't as true.

And definitely doing the choose your own teamcolor

Do you want to play against opponents who show up as dark blue?

epsy brings up a legitimate point, perhaps we should limit the colors to things that will not display with highlighter (0x777777 and greater?)

R 0 G 0 B 15 doesn't bring the white background and is yet hard to see.

I really like this idea of each team having customized skin/branding, but not before one can choose on it's own to display them the way he wants.

I've never really had a problem playing with dark colored players. Maybe it's because of my LCD. I don't know.

If I had to play a team with really dark colors, I can see how it would be a disadvantage for them as well as me. Then again, if I found it a problem, I could always modify my local textures to compensate (not a new idea).

Personally, I don't think there should be any restrictions on colors - even if a team wanted to exploit the color bug. But this is all very small in importance. What we should think about next is how to get the action going.

Concord, weren't you working on a website before you left for the summer?

Edit: Oh yeah epsy, sorry if I sounded confrontational. It's been a bad week. :/

I'm ok with custom colors or any kind of insanity as long as I can force them to look like team gold reliably. Sadly this won't happen tomorrow =)

tell me what you think: http://fortresspremierleague.pbworks.com/

its essentially a wiki, it is a wiki, but it allows you to edit and format like a word processor rather than in wiki language.
