When I made my post, i considered the fact that you (Z-Man) would probably find this idea objectionable. I appreciate your well reasoned response.

Perhaps we could let individual server admins decide how they would like to approach it. I am fairly certain that durka, myself, and a few others would like to give this "team leader approach" a try. I would guess that durka and most others would give these rights just for the Ladle. My fortess freedom servers will probably always carry these rights, because they were meant to allow as many teams as want, to have admin access to arrange matches on a neutral ground and practices in european servers for my american friends and american servers for my european friends.
However, there is no reason for you to do this with your server if you don't want to! As long as you make the arrangements to be there yourself or someone you designate! But those of us who host and play, this could be a godsend!

IMHO, both could coexist!

Perhaps on the challenge board, in addition to team signups, there can be a referee signup - people who won't play, but are committed to help move the Ladle along. Maybe they could be retired fort players, like in professional sports? :)

Well, the idea is that the team leaders will just have team captain powers. So basically, they can only /lock their teams and /invite players. If both captains have it, then there doesn't even need to be an admin present. All that needs to happen is both teams get their 6 players ready, and /lock the teams. Then, once a new match begins, they start.

My original thoughts exactly.

Yeah. It's always possible to lower the required access level for specific commands. For abuse prevention, we could also just allow them to call votes on starting a new match.

TY for the explanation! I haven't fully explored the full power of
Amathentication yet...but my cursory reading of the provided config file implied that this was possible!

the more we look for system invulnerability
the more we move away from personal trust metrics

the operating system for self-organising systems has to be based on the authenticity and honour of the participants
and in our case
team captains are empowered by their team mates
and server admins are empowered by the players who like playing on their server and the reputation that arises from this

i'd be reluctant to empower another level of bureacracy or referees
and i'd rather just trust my team captain
and the admin of the servers we play in

let's avoid stratification and the consequential power dynamics
let's keep it as a distributed network with players/captains/admins/commentators

nice to see a wise engagement between compguygene and z-man
hold the line

In regards to what server to hold the finals in. I am currently testing my server in a new VPS that is hosted in NY. It seems to be the ideal location for euro-american interaction. I am also building a new server binary for it that is going to include the "evil tournament patch" that Z-man's uses to automate the matches. My hope is to have my server be used in rotation with Z-man's. This would make it seem more "fair" to Americans, who sometimes feel slighted that the finals are usually held in a European server. If our goal is to build Fortress play, this would certainly help to achieve said goal.

Obiviously, in regards to how we run the Ladle, I am in favor of empowering Team Captains. But allow me to clarify. I think that the final decision of how to empower who should rest with the individual server admins. For example, if Durka and I wish to empower team captains, we should have the option to do so. However, if z-man wishes to continue to manage matches in the manner that he has in the past, he should be free to do that as well. Perhaps both approaches are compatible. I don't see why not. In allowing the greatest freedom to the server admins, we will be making it the most likely to get the servers we need as we grow!
