At risk of sounding like a dunce, could someone please explain the seeding to me. I was under the impression that after ladle 77 we would have one seed. If thirteen teams signed up, wouldn't it be 6 matches (12 teams) and 1 bye (1 team)? I haven't been following the changes very closely, but if someone could be kind enough to break it down for me, I'd appreciate it.

This is a good question breeze. There are two separate things happening with the brackets. The first is randomization and the second is seeding.

Randomization: We always use a bracket which can handle all the teams. Imagine we had 9 teams signed up. We couldn't use the 8-team bracket because that 9th team would need to "play-in" for one of the spots. But which team to play? We have to pick one, so we use a larger bracket and allow randomization to pick teams for participation in the play-in round. All the other teams get byes and advance normally.

Seeding: Partial seeding was created with the intention of keeping good teams apart in order to have stronger, more exciting competition later in the event. It was supposed to stop lopsided brackets when all the good teams eliminated each other before the semi-finals. This also allowed for Fortress to become more of a spectator event. (If the best teams were eliminated before the semis many people would miss the excellent displays of skill because they would be playing their own matches!) The drawback to seeding was that over time the good teams got better and the bad teams never got to advance because they rarely played opponents at their skill level, thus never gaining crucial tournament experience.

Today we have eliminated all but one seed. The seed is guaranteed a bye in the first round when available. This serves two functions. First, the winners will not be eliminating noobs in the first round. Noobs then have a better chance of playing other noobs, thus gaining valuable tournament experience. Second, the seeded team will also not face their opponents from the previous finals, which would make for a very exciting first round that no one would see! This is a best of both worlds compromise. Of course, if the bracket is full and no byes are available then all bets are off.

and the simpler point is that if we followed breeze's proposed scheme of 6 opening round matches, then there would be only 7 teams in the quarterfinals, meaning one team would have a bye into semis.

Okay, I see what you mean. Thanks for replying, Sinewav, and then Concord's post clarified it for me. At first glance it just seemed strange that Speed of Light wouldn't play Crazy Tronners Beta, but this would indeed give a team a free ride to the semi-finals. I guess I wasn't thinking far enough through the bracket. Thanks again.

The config file linked from the leads to a 404. But the auth file works.

I used ladle77 config. If I should have done otherwise, please tell me as soon as possible. I'll try to connect today between 2 conferences.

There is a file here: http://crazy-tronners.com/resource/ladle/ladle78_.cfg

But I thought kyle used the _ behind it, if it wasn't ready.

Best of luck to all of those competing today. I look forward to reviewing the recordings once Z-Man gets around to uploading them.
