Re: Best Guitarists Evar
Actually, most of the players on my list are excellent songwriters that happen to play in a genre that uses a lot of fast playing. But some of, say, Nuno Bettencourt's best work isn't his fast playing. Check out the third Extreme album, III Sides to Every Story (which you'd like in particular, since it's a God Opera). For that matter, give the guitar work on Pornograffiti that's not fast solos a serious listen-to. He's got funk down to a science. Jay Pepper, likewise, does his most brilliant work when he's not playing fast. He just happens to be in a hair band. Check out the song Wazbones, for example, or In The Name of the Gun, or Perish.XzL.Smart wrote:You guys are all saying 'fast' guitar players. Fast doesnt necessarily mean good. I forgot Zakk Wylde, oddly enough. How could I forget him? And Rocky George! Damn, I knew I left some folks out....

Others, on the other hand, might at first appear to not be anything special because of the genre they're in, but that would be ignoring the fact that they made substantial contributions to creating that genre. Dave Murray and Dave Mustaine both fall in that category. Sure, their music doesn't look cutting edge right now, but you have to remember they were doing that in the early 80s, and they were part of defining the metal genre as it is now. Hell, Iron Maiden was the leader of the new wave of british heavy metal (beating Priest out by just a hair).
And finally, in my opinion, being a good guitar player is much more than skill. It's everything. Stage presence, dramatic presentation, performance, etc. Technical competence is one thing, but the other stuff is what really makes a great musician. That's why these names are NOT on my list: Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jimmy Page. They're all extremely talented musicians in the studio. Satch has the distinction of being a great teacher, as well, so he might make my list some day, but the others will not ever be on my list.
So, while we're on it, favorite bass players? Here's mine:
Stu Hamm
Billy Sheehan
Pepsi Tate (of course)
Steve Harris (also: of course)
David Ellefson
Graham Maby
Me (heh, of course)
Robert Trujillo (from his time in Suicidal Tendencies, NOT his time in Metallica)
Frank Bello
Brad Divens
Of course there's more that I'm forgetting again.

I have tons more to say about Vai, good and bad. But rather than get into that, I'll post the name of one of the Best Guitarist Ever that you've never heard of, even though he is responsible for the last and final greatest moment in rock history.nsh22 wrote:did he?sinewav wrote:He stole it all from Frank Zappa.

Re: Best Guitarists Evar
I'm sorry, Rick Allen was a mediocre drummer who's only considered good because he didn't lose any of his mediocre abilities when he lost his arm. It's more accurate to say that he used to be a one-armed drummer that had two arms.Gonzap wrote:And fav drummers? the most epic is Def Leppard's (Rick Allen), plays one handed!
Don't get me wrong, his dedication and persistence is quite inspirational and an example for us all to follow. He's a great guy.
It's just that he was never a very good drummer.

But if we're going to talk about drummers, how about Charlie Benante or Shannon Larkin? Two metal drummers that could play *anything*. I've seen Charlie Benante play live, and he really kicks ass all the way around.
