LMS Tourney?

Re: LMS Tourney?
Every server in the tournament should have different settings.
I haven't decided if that's a serious suggestion or a sarcastic one.

Welcome to the bad idea club. We have milk and cookies.
How about you make an actual vote, instead of just deciding what you think is best. Put up two servers with each of the settings in them, let people test 'em out, then let 'em vote.
Problem solved?

Re: LMS Tourney?
IMO, it belongs to each server community to come up with a tournament with the settings of their server. Sure others can help, but pulling settings out of your back and making a tournament out of it isn't gonna work. They have to be well-established before competition happens, and popular LMS servers do have these setitngs. (Wildcat and Cheers come to my mind.)

Re: LMS Tourney?
I know that the settings that you described do not disable double/triple binding. However, they do limit players from double/triple binding to gain a speed advantage in ways they are used to doing. While I certainly understand your desire to go all "classic", I think that for the first LMS tourney, it would be a nice transition for the primary audience here to play in a server like what I have put up. This seems to have been confirmed by players that have come into the server, and those that I have deliberately brought to the server. I do not plan for this to be the only LMS tourney ever run. I do plan to run one every 2-3 months. Every time with different settings, to expose people to different types of play.Phytotron wrote:The point, I thought, was to make a standard, conventional "classic" server that would serve as a legitimate basis for a 'LMS' tournament, without any extreme or unusual settings (or relation to fortress et al). Oh well.
By the way, nothing I suggested had anything whatever to do with double or triple (or more) binding, and certainly doesn't disable it in any way.
Given that, I think that it might be really nice to run the next one with server settings similar to the default local game, but adjusted just in terms of scoring, and being able to better cope with lag. I think that this is a great way to develop LMS servers that are new, unique, and provide a unique challenge that people cannot have fully mastered with many months of play beforehand.
@concs It would be rather wrong to have a tourney with different settings in each server, unless people had to play through each server. Hmmm, not a bad idea, I may pursue it later.
Edit:
You may have a valid point. However, I am going to try this anyways. If it doesn't work and totally fails, I have nobody to blame but myself. BTW, I am not just "pulling settings out of my back". I have taken the time to test them, and re-test, etc. Part of the idea here is to provide a unique, one time experience. Nobody will have the advantage of having played the current Cheers settings, for example, since the last revision. And in this regard, I posit a simple question to you: Are well-established settings the only good ones?epsy wrote:IMO, it belongs to each server community to come up with a tournament with the settings of their server. Re: LMS Tourney?
This isn't about dragging people out of servers into tournaments right now. It's about having "competitions" in other game modes than fortress and sumo. Once the set up as a whole is established, people will sign up, it may take some months but it's worth the wait imo. No need to rush things.
I'm pretty sure even the ladle had to start somewhere.

Re: LMS Tourney?
The ladle started with the spoon, which was horribly disorganized and didn't really end. I say just get it started and advertise to people who primarily play LMS. Then get feedback from players on what to change and what to keep after it is over. With all the differences in servers not everyone is going to be happy with the settings, the best to hope for is to come up with a good compromise for everyone.
You've gone too far, turn back!

Re: LMS Tourney?
This might sound concordesque, but it pretty much simply started from fortress servers.dubStep wrote:I'm pretty sure even the ladle had to start somewhere.

Damn, no way. Would never EVER have guessed that. Thanks for the enlightening statement.

Re: LMS Tourney?
I'm not sure, but I think what epsy said was this: Fortress servers had already established the basic physical settings and environment before tournaments were created. In the case of this proposed LMS tourney, they settings are still debated.
The Ladle: "we've got a pretty good game here, let's make a competition." (easy!)
New LMS: "let's make a competition, what's a good setting to use?" (hard!)
