Too bad that doesn't apply to these forums eh? :]

Reclaiming this thread.

@liz ~ The bot is back, atm we have us & eu fort. In the process of getting 3vs3 sumo eu and mini tst servers.. Though the bot needs to be changed a little for the mini tst business. There's a possibility of a wild df server.. not 100% sure yet.

Given the high demand of best of 3 here, I will explain my position on this telling you why I think it doesn't work well in this format and what I think would be a better compromise.

Since the beginning of the first incarnation of this pickup channel, I only planned single matches. With best of three, you can have from two short matches to three very long ones. Call me paranoid, but judging with time this way is no good: you don't want to allocate time to such a length-varying activity as soon as you have free time.
Also, if it gets to be a long game, we don't ensure a regular flow of games, which makes people in the queue start getting bored.
A secondary problem is that a game might start from attracting players to the channel while the other isn't finished. If the second game starts while first game is ending, that's fine, they don't have to wait a lot for the server. But if people who just finished playing re-add, it will start piling up in a bad way. But that isn't to be laid on bo3, we'll just throw more servers at it.

Anyways, here's my suggestion:
20-minute-long matches, no more no less, with no round/score limit. With this you can count on the game to last 30 minutes after the bot announced it. Sure, that's still quite long, but at least you can be sure on how long it lasts.

What do you think?

PS: For people asking about 6v6, this isn't about filling a server with the most players possible, this is about small, organized games. Requiring 12 players total also takes years.

I'd say that when you have enough servers in the system, offering longer games on particular servers wouldn't be unreasonable, so long as you can keep the queue moving with the remaining servers. :) But I feel ya on keeping the queue moving. Just like pickup games on the playground, everyone has to get a turn or else the playground sucks.

I'm totally for this Idea, I'm not sure about the time though, maybe we could try 20 minutes, and adapt it to the most suitable solution.
we can also let the players decide according the time they have to play?

I like the idea, but I guess I would like it more if you could sort of 'sign up' to the promotion messages so you get pinged when someone wants to play? I don't actively use IRC 99% of the time so this would help out a lot.

No, I mean in the IRC channel. It's not that big of an issue really, but I've found myself checking IRC not often enough to catch a game.
