[ pic post ] what does your desktop look like ?
Welcome back, n54.
Here's my desktop now, after some more tweaking. Pager is now below the panel, and for smooth docking on the right I expanded the panel to match the pager in size. This has the added advantage of giving me bigger icons on the panel and I'm not losing a lot of screen space for it. With the big icons in the KasBar on the left, I have about a 1024x800 space in the middle (exact x size not computer).
Now I'm going to fool with full-screen settings, and possibly put together an application to catch certain applications and run them on the desktop directly.

No, but I'll give you a cookie if you tell me how to make it move.

Hmmm, create a window at desktop level. I've been wondering, and maybe you know, is it possible to have more than one window at desktop level? KDesktop makes the background I have already, and I'd like to replace it, but I don't want to hack kdesktop to do it.
Edit: Also, I could try an animated gif. I'll download one and stick it in there and see if it work. We could use this background as an animated gif for where it's used on various websites (most noteably the wiki). I stole, er, um, borrowed the tile from Tank's master server browser webpage.

That's neat. Does it work like in WIndows and stuff?
Apparently Kdesktop supports only showing the first frame of an animated gif.
Edit: Kdesktop supports .mng. That's motion png, right? Anyone know a way to convert animated gif to mng so I can test? I'll try the gimp.
Edit2: Tried mng, still no animation.
It has a "run this program to render your background" feature, but it has to rerun it, and you can't specify to only run once. That's a worthy hack to kdesktop, I might see if I can do that.

Ok, in KDE anyway, you can have more than one desktop-level window. Thing is, I'm finding applications to put in the back now. See, the ui I'm after is one where I sort my virtual desktops by type of work, so when I'm doing development, I'll be in my development desktop. When browsing the web and reading email and stuff, I'd like to be on that desktop. That lets me have applications that are always maximized, keep them out of the taskbar, thus keeping my taskbar small, and since it's stuff I always have open anyway, it's fine. Right?
So here's screenshot. I'm getting there. I'd like to break up the pager into 4 pieces and put them in the corners. But I haven't gotten that far. This desktop also has a clock on it.
I hit the KasBar, so it's still there, it's just hidden. Still getting it organized so it will never be very large.
Edit: forgot the attachment. While I'm here, anybody know a way to make it so when I toggle the 'show desktop' button, it stays toggled until I explicitly click it otherwise?

Ok, haha. A single screenshot can't catch it anymore. The panel changes colors to match the desktop it's on, the pager in the lower-right corner shows the desktops' backgrounds. Since the panel is translucent (somewhat, there's a tint), the panel's color matches the desktop's color in the pager. Neat.
So here's three screenshots that show this. One of them shows the General desktop which has a superkaramba applet in the middle that I hope will replace my KMenu. I'll need a systray replacement, and a pager replacement before I can get rid of the panel entirely.
Also, you can see how I've got one main application at pretty much full size on two of the desktops. I have Kontact on the desktop I didn't snap, since these forums limit you to 3. You don't want to see my calendar anyway.

Aha, a movie. It's gzipped, and ogg theora to boot. So you need to ungzip, and you need a media player that plays ogg theora.
And, uhhh, you probably want to put it in slow motion. At least, when I played it back in Kaffeine it played really fast and I had to slow it down.
