My 6 year old nephew was wondering why you can't breathe in outer space. I told him that we need oxygen to breathe and that there's oxygen in the air - but not in outer space. It all ended with him learning that oxygen comes from the plants, and that they "breathe in" what we breathe out.
He then spent the next 10 minutes or so running around in our garden breathing on trees and flowers for their survival, until he finally understood that wasn't really necessary.

Heh. This is such an amusing pattern. Things have been fine for however many years you've lived, then all of a sudden you're doomed because you've learned about something that had been true all along.
