Anything about how you get those awesome core-dumps, or why you don't get them...

Still confused about pings... :?

Post by Faramir »

Hey All! (Excuse me all, my english is poor... )

This is my first post here (thanks iceman for tell me about these forums, i'm still reading with many interest all of the contents).

I have a new server in the armagetron galaxian servers :D (Hispano Server, armagetron.org.es). Ir runs on Fedora Core. PIII Xeon, 512MB RAM, dedicated Server, 100Mbps bandwith. Actually the only process I am running at this server is the armagetron-dedicated daemon (of course, in adition to other services like Apache Web Server). I am still confused about the pings.

At this moment there is only one user (me, hehe) in my server. The ping according to the client game is between 140 and 220... Ok. I left the program running and I open a ssh connection with my server (i cannot make a ping from my computer becouse my server does not respond ping request for security reasons). I ping from my server to my computer and these are the results:

--- 213.xx.xxx.xx ping statistics ---
90 packets transmitted, 90 received, 0% packet loss, time 89872ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 87.715/95.213/121.128/10.111 ms, pipe 2

The results are totally discordant with the offered ones by the client game... I remember to you that at the moment of the test I continued executing the game... For the game, the ping is about 160-200 and for the server is 95 (¡!)

So I am still confused about this question. Perhaps the problem might be that I installed the rpm from armagetron.sf.net and would be better download the source and compile for my specific linux core? The problem cannot be (at this moment becouse there is only one player in the server) the overload of the server...

Thanks in advance! Regards,

Faramir :D

hi :D

i wouldn't worry about it as there must be something wrong with either the calculation of ping, or the use of the word "ping" itself in the game (maybe it means something else than what the rest of the world thinks of as ping).

it has nothing to do with which operating system you are running, everybody gets these crazy values :|

I agree with n54, what ever you do, don't trust the armagetron so called "ping" values!
