Shut the hell up.

Re: Shut the hell up.
Yes.. But you dont get that anymore, back in the day when only the people that actually cared about pickup played pickup, that is how it was... But now, we let people who joined the game 2 hrs earlier play in a ****** pickup match..
I think we need to accept the fact that pickup is different now and it isnt nearly as serious.

Sorry but for playing pickup often. It is quite rare to get people who don't know what is :Gazelle wrote:Yes.. grind, center, attack, def, bottle etc.
But well, I feel like every time I talk about pickup with some players who stopped playing pickup for month they say such things, which are not true.
Grandpa style: "back in my day people were more serious...". It's like some month ago when Ogo was still in ks, he went all like : "omg omg pickup is so bad and for noobs omg omg" and now we see him often there and I think he has fun.

Re: Shut the hell up.
What i actually meant was..
The level of skill in pickups has declined tremendously.
The average pickup player is sub-par. Where as about a year or 2 ago... The average pickup player was actually good, and it made the games enjoyable.
Now the games are either completely one sided because morons dont know how to pick teams, or players just suck.

Re: Shut the hell up.
I hate to have to throw my hat in the ring here, but I feel I must. I wasn't present when this happened. Although, judging the overall attitude of pickup and the responses in this thread, some of you should actually read the rules.
Re: Shut the hell up.
Dude, nobody needs to read the rules, if u have any morals at all its easy... Show up, play, dont add b4 timer... How is that ****** difficult?
People are allowed to speak freely, in any language they prefer.
People take this shit wayyyyy too seriously.

"Nobody needs to read the rules," " pickup is different now and it isnt nearly as serious." Do you think there is a correlation there?
"People are allowed to speak freely, in any language they prefer." - Not if you read the rules
If you can't follow simple rules, then play a public game and do as you wish. Pickup might become more serious, albeit less frequent then.

Re: Shut the hell up.
I love how u take a part of what i said.... If you read the rest it says "if people have morals its pretty easy".. So therefore there is no correlation because that wasnt what i was getting at when i said "Nobody needs to read the rules".breeze wrote:"Nobody needs to read the rules," " pickup is different now and it isnt nearly as serious." As for the language...
Rules
Channel language is English. Don't flood the channel with unrelated topics. Keep it friendly and drama-free.
It does not state that players cannot speak in a different language.. They cannot force you to speak in english, and if they did, trust me... nobody would use pickup.
Re: Shut the hell up.
I would rather see infrequent but serious pickup games. All of you saying "don't be so serious" are the problem. Pickup is serious. If you don't want to be serious, go public. We don't have to accept "this is the new pickup." What kind of nonsense is that? We need more pressure from everyone to increase the value of the game not throw hands in the air and say "oh well!"

Re: Shut the hell up.
Sorry, I didn't mean to single you out or put your words under a microscope. However, your comments generally reflect the attitude of a lot of players. Granted, having morals and treating everyone politely is the most important [unwritten] rule. It shouldn't mean we can disregard the other rules. They are functional, they have a purpose to help facilitate a serious arena for playing.
Re: Shut the hell up.
Listen, if you want to talk in pickup fine, do it. As long as your conversation doesn't hurt your team and your idle chat isn't flooding my screen I could care less. What I do have an issue with is exactly what happened today: A nameless spectator chose to start a involved conversation with two players who consistently ignored the game round after round to chat. When I asked the spectator to stop chatting (I even said please), I was ignored, laughed at, and insulted.
As far as muting goes, yes, I understand the concept and agree that it is an easy solution. My problem lies with the fact that we, as active players in a pickup match, shouldn't have to be put in a position that requires us to take measures against a problem that already has preset measures in place to prevent (yeah, there's a reason you have to type /shout to chat as a spec. Because you're not supposed to).
Hoax has already come forward and clarified the rules for those who may have forgotten, or disregarded entirely, what else is there to discuss? My only goal was to bring this issue to light, and so I have. So why in the hell do people still feel a need to argue? If you absolutely HAVE to chat during a pickup, just download Skype, Teamspeak, or something similar. You'll be free to speak to whoever could not live without your precious words for a measly 30 minutes or so without the risk of hurting other players because you're AFK, or your team missed the "DEF DOWN" instant because it was drowned out by all your mindless chatter.
Why am I so angry about this? Because it's common-*******-sense.

Re: Shut the hell up.
For one fortress pickup game to start, you need to 12 people to !add. You then wait for the captain to pick the server, you join the server, you wait for everyone to join, you vote for a captain, you wait for that captain to /op the other captain, they take it in turns to pick players whilst waiting for latecomers to still arrive, you wait for the captain to give the team positions, you shuffle into the correct positions, you then wait for everyone to /ready... And finally the game starts. From the !add to the game start, it can take up 15 minutes to even begin
And what kind of game is it? A boring, often laggy and low-skilled game of fortress
We can honestly organise 6v6 fortress quicker by just grabbing people from the grid and joining a ladle server. You're not limited by one game then either, and can have 'competitive' play there. Same for tst...
Pickup puts up barriers to newbies to fort/sumo, but also the existing community - there's no doubt about it. The number of times I have personally booted up tron to see that the only occupied fort/sumo server is a pickup one, and have just closed tron to do something else. It's a daily occurrence
To say it how it is - people used to love pickup because noobs basically didn't know about. Good players would whisper the pickup secrets to each other, and would guarantee high level fort on a regular basis because people didn't know what it was or how to play it. Now the word has gotten out, and now the good players don't play anymore because the bad players are always !adding
I was opposed to pickup when the good players played, and I'm still opposed to it now the skill has dropped. Let's get rid of it plz

Re: Shut the hell up.
I think shutting down fort6 for a while might benefit everyone. I miss public Fortress because I don't always have 1-2 hours of free time available to wait around to play, especially when the game winds up being half-assed. Dropping in for a 100 point match or even squeezing in a few rounds here and there would be great. In this case, as ogo has clearly outlined, the community cost of fort6 far outweighs the benefits.
Years ago I remember asking for a #pickup channel function that announced public games (the opposite of pickup players promoting in public). It would be nice if every 10 minutes of so ArmaPickupBot searched for Fort servers and displayed them. So rather than having 6-8 players !added we could have that many playing in public Fortress attracting other players.
I think it is time to hang-up fort6 for a while. Maybe those of us who agree can collectively support each other and ween ourselves off the fort6 habit.
