'Insert a variety of derogatory words here'

This is a horrible thing, this is why I always walk with my fist clenched, and my muscles tightened when I walk around suspicious areas.

It really hurts me as a human to see other humans hitting random people for fun, especially defenseless random people. If you want to fight your friends for fun or play a trick on your friends that's fine, I mean if you know they'll be cool with it.

Going up to someone random and hitting them at full strength and then possibly stealing their property... just wow. Not to mention in the cases we saw they always did it in a group, which would mean even if the person isn't knocked out they would have to fight back against multiple people... completely unfair.

People are horrible, so much potential yet used to hurt each other. The sadness almost brings me to tears.

And sine in response to your comment I view virtual and real life matters as completely separate entities. GTA is a game where you can kill people ruthlessly and do things that otherwise aren't possible or completely dangerous in real life for fun. The difference is that one is virtual the other is real, real flesh and blood people who feel pain and suffering and have families not coding and drawings. If I make a movie and someone dies in it horribly does that mean I actually want to do that to someone in real life just because its a picture? No, that person who died in the movie is still alive...probabally (depending on how much time has passed and if an accident happened during the movie). One is real one is not, there is a clear and obvious difference, at least to me.

well... thats what u get when u have stupid people. its never right to injure someone unless they attack u with force first. No offense. but if u notice like that one guy posted its only black people that we see playing this game in the video. its stupid. they need to be punished. as hopsin says... "Man, why do black people gotta be the only ones who can't evolve Cause you in the streets acting like a neanderthal It's clear you can't stand the law, you're lost as an abandoned dog And all you're interested in is fighting, rapping, and basketball" ( yes ik this is not all african americans) but there is alot of black people who only care about those things. (this is from hopsins words not mine)((hes black himself))(((not saying black people cant evolve))))

what i dont get tho is the media is only pointing the fingers at these black kids; white kids play it too. I dont get why they report things that way.... merica'

We all crash cars/bikes/cycles and kill people in this game.

Because its a video game. Using that same logic, I could condemn you for liking to make people crash on your bike on Tron. You see how silly it sounds?

edit: and I think just about everyone else on this thread hit it on the head

Dude.. This is sick shit.. I've never heard of this before, what the **** are these kids thinking?

As far as GTAV goes, If the kids are dumb enough to go out and do it "on the streets" after they do it in a "game". Then i believe that is just poor parenting and the kids not being taught the difference between wrong and right.

I think it would go beyond that with the lack of ability to show compassion for other living things or to tell the difference between fantasy and reality. There's really no way for a normal person to grow up not understanding that society considers harming others in such a way wrong. Whether or not you care though is a completely different topic.

If I were to watch a sport it would probably be hockey or cricket. I'm no fan of sports by any means though. Well, I still fall under your category of fine on the topic of Pitts anyways. :P I probably found myself in a new hole disliking sports completely. haha

There is no killing of people in Armagetron. In this game you derezz programs. It's deliberately abstract. In reality there are no bikes that make sharp turns and leave walls of light behind them. In fact, some people don't even use the default cycle model in Armagetron. Where are the people and the gore? It's not there. Armagetron more like Tetris than Contra.

This is significantly different than the heavy emphasis on realism in games like GTA and COD. The point is, why would do you think it's fun to put a bullet in someone's head? Why do you think it's fun to beat a prostitute? These are important questions to ask yourself. Saying "it's just a game" is equally as stupid as acting like an idiot online and saying "it's just the Internet." Actions have consequences. You should strive for greatness in every aspect of your life. Non-violence is a tremendous virtue and this includes pantomime violence. And be careful when you boast about knowing the difference between fantasy and reality. Some of the best minds know it's not so easy.

Being derezzed is dying in their world. Once that happens, they no longer exist. Just because you don't call it something else doesn't make it different.

Without trying to find biased links ..
http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Derez

There are people in the bikes, and the goal is to have them crash and die. You are doing it to them, and you purposely try to do it and find fun in it.

The differences in graphics really ain't that meaningful. They stand for exactly what it's meant to whether or not they look realistic or not. It sounds a lot like an excuse for special pleading to allow Tron and not the rest. Also, there are more realistic Tron games now as well. Are they considered wrong to enjoy as well for you?

I really have fun doing head shots in game (sometimes I miss it and install FPS just for it) or knock out people in GTA.

But there is no way I would do that in real life because the gap between real and unreal is clear for me and that it is out of consideration.

Depends on the level of abstractness. Newer games try to immerse you into a realistic world. There are whole parts of the industry dedicated to blurring the line between fantasy and reality, like dome gaming for instance. It won't be long before gamers suffer PTSD (some already have nightmares and other health issues from gaming). Yes, I know I'm speaking about a minority of gamers who make life imitate art, but there are still some questions the rest of us should as ourselves. It's wonderful you have been equipped with a mechanism to stop you from playing "Knockout." Not everyone does, obviously. The question is, why do you ever feel the urge to hurt someone, even a fictional person? And just as an individual must hold back the urge for violence, a whole society should also do the same. Would Jesus or Gandhi play Call of Duty? Doubtful. They probably wouldn't make excuses for it either.

And to directly answer the question if I would enjoy a more "realistic" Tron game with human-shaped characters derezzing, no I absolutely would not enjoy it. I went through TRON 2.0 with the cheats on because I just wanted to check out the storyline and did the bare minimum of "playing" (the game absolutely sucked BTW). The reason I like Armagetron and other classic Tron games has everything to do with to abstractness. The cycle in Armagetron is little more than a tiny remote controlled car I'm driving around drawing lines. There is no agony in Armagetron, no pain, and no suffering. If games are supposed to be a pleasant escape from reality, why choose a game where you cause agony to fictional characters?

hurting people in gta is definitely not acting like a jerk on the internet, the difference? behind every screen there's a human being, some don't care about what people say to them online but some, like me, care. If you are being a jerk online you hurt REAL people's feelings. You hurt nobody beating virtual people.

It's fun because you always dreamed of being a hero, or having super powers or being a total badass nobody could ever intimidate. In that game you are a badass and you do stuff you couldn't possibly do even if you wanted to, and you hurt nobody in the process. It's fun because you can see your endurance (even if it's virtual). COD is fun because a headshot means you have good aim not because you killed somebody with it. In fact you killed NOBODY.

If this were the big worry, we would be getting rid of a lot of movies and whatnot as well. And when it comes to horror movies and stuff, I do consider it a pleasant escape from reality.

The thing about doing all of this in a fantasy world for me is to sort of be put in someone elses life and live it. It may include killing, torturing, etc. but it comes down to knowing how to differentiate between the movie/game and reality.

As far as the Jesus thing .. It's a bit lost on an atheist. Not that I would consider him a great role model if he were to exist anyway, then if he is god then that makes him all sorts of a terrible person. But, falling off topic now ..
sinewav wrote:And to directly answer the question if I would enjoy a more "realistic" Tron game with human-shaped characters derezzing, no I absolutely would not enjoy it.
My point was that the game we're playing here is supposed to mimic that. It's just that we don't look at it as people dying. This same way, I don't consider virtual sprites on the sidewalk of a game to be people dying. If you throw a dart into a poster picture of someone's face, it's not actually them nor is it a person. That's closer to a real person than the game characters are as well.

I know it's easier to not consider them people in this game than many others, but for many it's simply not a person you're trying to kill / shoot / etc. When it comes to wanting to do this and whatnot, games have actually been shown to be a positive outlet for such urges.
sinewav wrote:why choose a game where you cause agony to fictional characters?
As you say in this game, there's nobody feeling pain and agony. I feel that same way in other games. I'm not sure how to really say it except that there's not much of a difference between the games other than graphics.

If you shoot a box in a game, that's no problem right? If they say there's a person in that box, would it be a problem? It's not shaped like a person, doesn't look like a person, sound like, or anything else. You're just supposed to know there's a person in it. Is it wrong to shoot the box in the game now? You're supposed to know there are users inside of the bikes on here, but you can't see them. If that's what makes this alright, then shooting a box said to have someone in is alright as well, right?
