What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

No walls in front of you. =p
That would be outside, and possibly nowhere if someone built a wall on the edges of the bounds rectangle.
It would be nice if the map format supported it directly, but not required. Special maps could be map with partitioned spawn points, and then real camping can begin. :)

(I can't wait till the word "camping" is redefined over this)

Spawn then X frames away from any existing walls. X=server option.
Damn, it sure has been a while!

This is a solved problem, really. :)

I've seen numerous versions of asteroids that started you in invincible mode. In fact, plenty of games have done that. So let the guy go through walls for like 3 seconds or something, that's long enough to get out of pretty much any maze and into a spot where he can maneuver. If it's not, tough luck.

Alternately, blow a big hole in it, something I've also seen in asteroids and some other games. Just put a big explosion while spawning, and if he can't get out of that, tough luck.

Overall, let's keep in mind the most important concept underlying the game.

There's no amount damage that a little respawning won't fix!

Err, the explosions a bad idea IMO...But the invincible mode is a good idea..lets be sure to make his wall invincible also (if people hit it while hes invincible they DONT die :/)

I like both ideas as options-- but instead of an "invincible" wall, just don't have invincible players output a wall until they're vulnerable.

If he still has that code and it can reasonably be adapted to the new version, it might be a good place to start. Your idea, Luke, seems to include his 4 lives code but with added value. :)
I've played on 4-lives .. it was fun. If you crashed into a wall, you didn't die, but you passed through, but it did deduct one of your 4 lives. So when you've run out of lives, then you'd explode.

Would come up with some pretty interesting tactics, such as taking a live on purpose to cut off someone which would force them to take multiple hits.

And each hit would be a point, so in a 4 player game, one could get 12 points if they swept the board (and was set up similar to other goshdarn servers at the time, that allowed for 10 points per match, so it wans't uncommon when 6 or 7 people were on that matches were won in one round.
