Damn, it sure has been a while!
Yeah, my comments should have been directed at server admins and the current crop of players.
(This post should have been labled different because I've found it hard not to experiment and try out new servers.)
It's been a while though since I've seen more than one or two decent players in a game at one time. 0.2.7.1 servers ... mostly caused this. Good players left because the settings sucked, and new players have been learning on crappy servers.
There is small hope. I just played on a server named Lumatron ... it's a 2.7.1 server ... and plays quite well ... probably better than armagoshdarnish 2.7.1 which I had thought was the best 2.7.1 server (I don't think it's around anymore).
Sorry swampy for being a bit harsh on swampland, but changes in various settings such as cycle_speed, cycle_rubber_speed, and cycle_delay have only excentuated the defects in 0.2.7.1.
Breakfast will be down for a while starting in about a week and will probably come back up with a new name (if I get a chance to put it up again).

(What do you mean by "real" server? Just one that isn't a test server?)
OK, so it turns out I'm not a big fan of Lumatron. Reasons being, in reverse order of emphasis:
1) I hate high rubber, but I think 10 is a bit low for my tastes. It's just way too touchy. Low is still good — don't get me wrong — and we agree on the not going above 50 (or 5, however you put it). BiH is at 40, which is good (and is one of the reasons it's my favorite), but it still can permit a bit of the grinding abuse, if a lot less than others. To my recollection, I've never played an online server with 20 or 30 rubber; maybe that'd be poifect, I dunno.
Additionally, like I've commented elsewhere, in my mind one of rubber's best purposes is for acting like a cushion to compensate for high ping and/or low framerate (and slower reflexes like mine, heh), and 10 just don't cut it in that respect. (However, a plus for Lumatron is that I actually got decent fps there, comparable to what I get in BiH.)
All that said, 10 rubber isn't actually a big deal and is nonetheless a nice change of pace, even if you feel like you're driving on eggshells.
2) There are receding tails, which is good, but they seemed to take a long time to recede (don't know if it's wall length or just because of the slow speed). The only problem here is it may encourage the lame "big box and run" and self-imposed-big-box-camping strategies (the latter related to #5 below).
3) Brakes — which, to say the least, are unnecessary at such low speeds and acceleration. They're also the sort that for whatever reason make things go screwy when you use them.
4) What's up with the bots? When I was alone, it started at one, but then every time I dumped one a new bot would join the next round. Then when another human player joined, it added about 8 bots to the game. What the hell? Bad move.
5) It has what I think is that — excuse the expression — totally retarded scoring system: the 4 points for a dump, negative 2 for getting dumped, and 10 just for surviving. I never found out whether the zone was win or kill, but I'd bet win. Either way, another really bad move.
So, while #'s 1 and 2 aren't so bad, and #3 is nearly irrelevant, #'s 4 and 5 just ruin it for me.

No offence taken, and hopefully the issues of 2.7.1 will be corrected and game play will be closer to what most of us cherish about the game.eggcozy wrote:Sorry swampy for being a bit harsh on swampland, but changes in various settings such as cycle_speed, cycle_rubber_speed, and cycle_delay have only excentuated the defects in 0.2.7.1.
I'd like to see you have a going away party on your server before it's taken down. I know I'd like to have a few more matches under my belt there before it's gone.
