Yeah, it was that way back then generally, not really an incompatibility.

Now that I think about it, there may be a way to un-expire the bugged builds if you know how to use a hex editor. Open the executable in it, search for the version string and overwrite the 'alpha' or 'beta' part with something else. The expiration code checks for those to be present and if that check hasn't been optimized out, expiration will be disabled.
