That would be the day, although.... how ill would that be if it was open source.

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
Ultimately a missed opportunity by Disney. Open source game, couple better writers on the movie. Really could have made something.sinewav wrote:inorite? Free software was Kevin Flynn's dream. Stupid ENCOM.
Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
I think I would spend a lot of time writing bitter Psychotron-esque posts if someone wanted to make a Tron: Legacy edition of Armagetron.
Simply put: Disney abandoned the free software theme very early in the movie. Even Flynn gave up on it and worried more about his new life form. I really felt like Disney was pissing on all of us OSS people. So I'd just as soon disown the new movie.
The best "sequel" to Tron is The Matrix. **** Disney.

Except the hero, who has a vision of openness, saves the day and decides to take interest in ENCOM. Not to mention, the board of directors are made out to be evil-ish, and we can assume they will have something coming to them once young master Flynn assumes his rightful place at the company.Lucifer wrote:Simply put: Disney abandoned the free software theme very early in the movie. The movie was still pretty bad though. I liked it just slightly better than I expected, haha.

I think I'm just going to wait until it shows on basic (monopolised) cable.
Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
It was exactly what I expected. On my todo list is digging up my post here where I predicted the movie.sinewav wrote:Except the hero, who has a vision of openness, saves the day and decides to take interest in ENCOM. I realize Sam was down with the free software thing, but he abandoned it in favor of Flynn's new life form. So the movie ends with no real closure on the free software thing.
I really loved the beginning, though. I had tears in my eyes when he stole the new OS version (with Encom obviously acting like Microsoft) and put it on the internet for free. That was ******* badass.
But then they threw it all away in favor of the stupid User religion.
@Phytotron: Do that, it's really not worth the money to see in the theater. If you can get it on netflix without hurting yourself by not seeing something else you want, (like netflix streaming) then it's worth a watch there. Otherwise, man, as much as you dislike some of the things going on around here, you will *hate* the new movie. Even *I* didn't like it.

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron

I was like luci in that i loved the beginning but noticed the OSS part died there.
the plot was not the greatest, but the gfx were very well done imo (not enough 3d though)

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
The special effects may have been awesome, but there's something about them....um, I don't know, it was too easy?
The original TRON was the first movie to be done all with computers. In fact, they got in trouble at the academy awards (and didn't win any) because they "cheated". (That word is a direct quote from something, I don't remember what) TRON was ground-breaking, and anticipated soooooo much in movie making, not to mention in IT (that's "Information Technology").
But this movie was just more of the same CG we've been seeing for years now. They didn't do *anything* ground-breaking. Not even the story was ground-breaking. It was more of "Let's make a sequel of an old movie and make more money out of it". There was *nothing* in it that jived with the original movie. NOTHING.
It was just another stupid sequel.
I'm already disowning it. It's not Tron. It's something else, something that looks like Tron. To paraphrase someone here, we're all now dumber for having seen it. It's *that* bad.

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
i was going to visit america precisely to track down the director and script-writers when they were established winter 2008
yup luci
they went for more cgi...
the real edge is social:
the teamwork of arma could have been the basis of a film
and of course OS principle and practice
peeps are still thinking the wrong way round with these things --
it is not about us producing something like the film...
z-man produced something very different than multiplayer snake game with fortress:
acceleration with proximity to a wall and zones in fortress
and our self-organised player skills are a template for future virtual tournaments!
they should be copying us...
(of course
would have helped if we had got our act together a little more wrt tronic progression or tron in schools...)
can we produce a better film script than tron legacy?
beat them at their own game
is what i say
one last thought to leave you with:
they have made a loss from this last film so far
and business-heads will be looking for ways of making up for it...
there might just be an opportunity in the coming years...

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
Lucifer, thats not exactly true.
They used the same actor for Kevin Flynn as they did in the original. They used CG to figure out what his face would be like x amount of years ago and put it on someone else's body (for CLU and the early scenes where he was young again). Nobody else has ever done this before.
And nobody HAD to make a movie. Stop complaining about it, seriously, the fact they did it should either be of no concern to you, or you should not complain about it. Sure say you didn't like it, but pointing out that they did it "wrong" is just your opinion. And one many people will probably disagree with

Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
Ok, that was pretty interesting. However, the CGI CLU was pretty bad and failed to cross the uncanny-valley the way the characters in Avatar did. In fact, I think if they could have used the tech Cameron has, it would have been much, much better.syllabear wrote:They used the same actor for Kevin Flynn as they did in the original. Re: Tron Legacy Edition of Armagetron
personally, I don't care how it looks if the story is good (thus why Tron is a better movie than TR2N Legacy and Episode IV is better than III).
The special effects in War and Peace suck, but no one complains about how Tolstoy didn't use cgi.
