The image/x-png MIME type seems to have to do with it. The official PNG MIME type has been image/png for apparently over 9 years!
Edit: but even the spec recommends the recognition of image/x-png.

Two Yale students succeeded in pulling off one of the funniest pranks ever recorded in the history of the 121 year rivalry against their arch-enemy Harvard during Yale's season-finale football game in Boston last week.
David Aulicino and Michael Kai and about twenty other Yale students disguised themselves as Harvard fans by donning "Harvard Pep Squad" T-shirts and painting their faces with the home team's crimson and white colors.
The group spent most of the first quarter slowly gaining the trust of the Harvard fans by encouraging them to cheer for the home side, and even tossing a few Harvard T-shirt into the crowd for good measure.
Hence, no one in the crowd suspected anything was wrong when the group began handing out over 2000 red and white pieces of construction paper to Harvard students, alumni and faculty. The fans were told that the sea of paper would make an enormous sign, which when held up in unison, would read "Go Harvard". Little did the fans know that they were actually being used to pull off an ingenious prank against their own school, that had been over two years in the making.
As the second quarter began Kai and Aulicino directed the fans to hold up their cards, and the crowd gladly obliged, creating an enormous human billboard. What the fans didn't realize is that the gigantic sign actually spelled out "WE SUCK". Again and again, the Harvard faithful were fooled into proclaiming to the world, that they suck, leaving the visitors side of the stadium in stitches and Harvard players bewildered.
During the prank, Kai received a call from a friend who was sitting on the opposite side of the stadium. He was laughing hysterically, saying, 'Keep it going, it looks great.' Kai and Aulicino have since launched a Web site - www.harvardsucks.org - where fans can purchase souvenirs of the hilarious stunt. Something tells us that this is going to be talked about for a very long time, or at least until Harvard fans manage to come up with something even better.
