Not letting it bother oneself seems a good idea. On the other hand tolerating it is entirely optional. I personally prefer to be surrounded by sane people.

Sinn wrote:As for the most part most racial comments should be taken with a grain of salt. If a racial comment really gets to you then most likely you are insecure about yourself and your race or gender preference. Most people who get offended by racist terms usually have very little sense of humor.
So people who hear shit about the color of their skin or sexual preference on a regular basis and get annoyed at its continuity are insecure? No, because no matter what the topic is, if somebody/people bother you for the same thing over and over, you'll get fed up with it. That's not insecurity, that's just sheer annoyance with others' stupidity.
Sinn wrote: For example you watch a comedian letting the N word fly, or talk about gays or Jews or whatever it's funny, most people find it hilarious.
Most people? Where do you get that kind of statistic from? The audience. Well clearly most people that attend a standup act expect what they're going to see, and if they expect racism in whatever form, then it's a part of their humor. So the audience isn't a fair basis for a statement like that. I can think of many people who don't tolerate racism in any form.
Sinn wrote:I would also like to point out that a lot of racism has those little hidden meanings that others may not seem to understand. For example a lot of people that call others the "N" word are not racist, or claim not to be. Many people i've spoke to about this subject say just because your black doesn't make you a N'er. N'ers are people who lie, steal, cheat and are just all around bad people. Basically meaning if you are called the "N" word it's not because your black but because of the kind of person you are.

Is that o.k.?
No, it's not OK. I don't know how it is in other countries, but in the USA there is an enormous divide between people of color. All "blacks" are not the same and have widely different values. In fact, a large portion despise the use of the word and shun those that do, whether they share the same racial attributes or not. I understand the desire to take a derogatory word and make it a term of endearment, but this one in particular has so much negative energy behind it, I can't see it ever being acceptable, anywhere, anytime.
Sinn wrote:There is racism all over the place. People getting picked on for certain religions, color of skin, where they live, being poor or live in a trailer park, their sexual preference. Although many of these do not technically count as racism I include them all in the same area. There is racism everywhere and always will be until everyone is exactly the same.
Yeah you're right, being shitty towards an individual for no particular reason is totally justified by being shitty to everybody in general for no reason.
Sinn wrote:If racism really bothers you then you really need to get over it and move on. Everyone picks on others for something or another. I'm sure everyone who has been a target of racism has said something awful to someone else, so I guess it kinda comes out even doesn't it?
So you're arguing that being racist/a jerk towards somebody is justified by the assumption that that person has been mean in there past. Really sound logic there. I make all of my decisions based purely off of assumptions, because clearly that's the best way to know what you're doing.

LOL. Nice way to put words into someones mouth. Bravo!

The main point of the comments was to show that everyone everywhere get picked on for all kinds of stuff. Everyone gets teased or put down for one thing or another. Yet for some reason it's only bad if the picking is only based on race or color of skin. The point is to get over it. If you have a sense of humor and just let it go then your life will be much better wouldn't it?

Also I said previously, the occasional joke is ok and shouldn't be a big deal. If it becomes an ongoing harassment then something should be done to stop it. But hey most people here walk around with their nose stuck up in the air like their shit doesn't stink, so I guess I can see why you guys take everything so personaly.

I suggest you lighten up a little bit and stop taking everything so seriously are your gonna be walkin around pissed at the whole world. It seems half of you already are from your attitudes.

I'm not saying it's OK, but for **** sake LET IT GO MAN!

I don't think I'm overreacting, in fact I'm pretty calm. But I think that if you take the time to write a 10 paragraph post defending your racism, you're probably making more than "the occasional joke." And I don't think anybody here would argue (though I can't really know, I haven't read everything) that racism is the only bad form of behavior towards others, it's just the topic at hand. General dickishness shouldn't permit racism or any other type of intolerance.

if everyone says the occasional racist joke to one person, wouldn't it become ongoing harassment?

Guys, i'm just being honest about the subject. I'm sorry if it's unacceptable for some of you. Everyone has used some form of racism in their lives maybe on purpose or not. Everyone has said or done something wrong without even realizing it. Learning that there is a problem you cannot fix but learning to deal with it in a positive manner is the best defense.

Just think about all the times you call someone a retard for example. How do you think that makes some people feel? Someone in the group is likely to have a relative or know someone who maybe me mentally retarded. Many of these people have learned to deal with the term and realized that people aren't really putting down mentally handicap people. Have you ever said a your momma joke and had someone say "hey, my moms dead?" I know it's not the same thing but every where in the world someone is getting hurt by someone else's unthoughtful words.

I'm not condoning anything and as I already said I know i'm guilty of the things we are talking about. But please learn to take other peoples words with a grain of salt and just silence them and turn them in if you want I guess. Please for your own sakes don't go through life hurt by everything some asshole says to you :|

As i've said a million times poke, i'm not defending racism even tho I can see how my posts may be coming off that way. I'm just saying it's there and it's not going away any time soon if ever. So the best way to deal with it is to (insert paragraph 3)

Sorry but this topic is about racism no? There is no1 in this topic saying that saying words like "retard" are acceptable. That's not what this topic is about.

Edit: To say racist things in a topic where you claim not to be racist doesn't really help your case.

It was to make a point Luck.

I included other forms of harassment in with it because I believe they are just as bad. My point was why is everyone so worried about racism and not about other things going on. It's a general bullying type attitude. Some people deal with racism some don't. Reverse racism is worse today then "old school" racism imho. I don't get offended when people call me a "cracker" I mean I could, I wasn't alive in that time and I have never done such a thing, HOW DARE you call me a cracker?!?!

I'm here to post and really don't care if people like what I have to say. If I get kicked for my point of view you can ask me later if I care and I can honestly reply that I don't. I'm being honest and many people here aren't, just saying what everyone wants to hear or what will make them look good.

If none of us had real opinions why can't people all just reply......racism is bad mmmkaay.

That is a good question. How come every time people think of racism they only think of black people? There are tons of races being targeted by racism. Just to ask a question, what is the general thought on reverse racism......anyone?

Ok well, luck now i'm just going around in circles with people who are obviously not reading the posts.

Luck i'm trying to figure out why your trying to pretend you havn't acted racist. I'm sure everyone on tron, especially if they have been on vent with you know you have made MANY racist comments/jokes. Stop coming on here and trying to make yourself look good and be honest. Just because you make a racist joke here and there doesn't make you racist, not in my book anyway.

Liz I myself have heard YOU make racist comments and jokes, so wtf are you doing on here judging others?

I'm willing to bet half the people or MORE posting in this topic right now have made racist comments or jokes. A bunch of hypocrite pots on here calling the kettle black! (that is not a racist comment btw in case your dumb)
