tried to post a reply to the 'icemans location' post and got this

yeah, well, I had a power outage at home for around 3 hours, and at the end of it I got a new ip

. So, I just found out and I have updated the domains to point to the correct ip. Problem should be solved. (It's trying to connect to my comp to send mail you see...)

hmm since i was messing with my network stuff thingys router crapola today i began wondering if your isp might be doing the same as my isp which is... *inhales* ...that they have your router set up with an absolutely fixed hostname (ie if you look up your hostname in an internet page which tells you what it sees you will always see the same name - not the hostname of your computer) and if so if you could use that hostname as the name of your server in armagoshdarn (& possibly route everything incoming on that specific port number you set the armagetron server to use from the router to wherever it should go) *exhales*

hmm ok tell me if i should give the description of this idea another shot

hehe ok

stuff i'm guessing:
- you have xDSL (x stands for any letter)
- so you have an xDSL "router"

if so:
- find the hostname of your router (the hostname given at a place like http://whatismyipaddress.net/ works for me, there should be other methods as well)
- check that your router's hostname doesn't change when getting a new ip (just turn off the router a weekday before you go to bed)

if that works out and you see that you have a router with a static hostname (i have) i was thinking there might be a way to use this router hostname as the server address instead of the ip (which changes). the router should be set up to forward all requests it gets with the portnumber(s) used for the armagetron server to the armagetron server (i'm thinking on a lan using statc ip's here).
it probably wont work with the program the way it is now but maybe it could?

Well... That seems like a lot of work and I can't really be offline for that long. (The forums depend on my comp @ home to send mail.) Plus, I don't use a router. (Where tf did you get that idea?) I use a Windows (:() 2003 Sever. Jump on the train man. I know what I'm doing. Besides, this is the first time my ip changed in 6 months. It's all right n54... I think I have it covered...

well i was only guessing about wheter or not you had a "router" (some ppl refer to them as adsl "modems" - imo both "router" and "modem" is a misnomer but "router" is technically slightly better... "one-port-router" would be better still but then most ppl would look like

the idea wasn't meant to imply that you don't know what you're doing, it was just an eccentric idea and since it would probably involve using hyperterminal (w/console cabling and other special equipment) or similar & reconfiguring we'll just lay it to rest right now

It would be a good if the hostname stayed the same, but for me, the hostname is defined by the ip address lol for example if im 211.33.1.1 then my hostname is something like c211-33-1-1@blah.blah.com.au .. pitty!

Twas a good idea node, but doesn't work for me, btw cool link.

yeah, but i realize that even if your isp has a static hostname for your router it's a lot of trouble for little gain - i'm just predisposed to being a bit too lenient towards my own crazy ideas at times lol

*hopes i'm not sounding arrogant or anything like that*
