I just got a really nifty idea.

What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

I just got a really nifty idea.

Well first off I have to say I don't beleive I just said nifty.
Anyway-

I had an idea for a friends list. That's the basis of it. There could be a way to add to your friends list whle the person you want to add is in the game by pressing escape. In the menu there would be a menu item with the players currently in the game. This could be isntant or it could send a request. Now what could possibly be a problem is someone changing there nick. Then the friend would not be able to be accessed. Then I thought, "what if It saves there IP? If it did that then people would know your ip. So if you want a friend it has to be someone you trust.

But here is the advantages of this-

-(this idea could also work for something other than a friends list)You could toggle a feature that lets you press the chat button and a small menu pops up which has your friends list or a list of the people currently in the game. This would let you be able to easily instant/private message people in the game. Or you could talk to your friends in another server! Which would be even cooler.

-This one would really make me happy. There could be a menu in the "Ineternet Game" section that lists all of your friends. You could istantly jump to the server your friend is currently on. If your friend is currently not on a server than the name does not appear on the list.

I thought this was a really cool idea so share your thoughts or suggestions. :)

Hint: don't begin about implementation details if you don't know what you're talking about. IP adresses change too much these days. I've been on a lot of static addresses, but I believe this one is dynamic (although it hasn't changed in a while) and AFAIK most consumer addresses are dynamic. For it to work well, we'd need accounts and a simple and reliable way to tell where they are.

What about a list of certain nick names that increase the score of a server?

With one variation of a XMPP-based authentication scheme, everyone would be by default represented as their IM account (eg, luke@dashjr.org) until you added them to your roster, at which point they would appear as whatever name you assigned to them. The standard roster supports placing people into groups, one of which could easily be Friends. But if you wanted, you could group by any variable number of categories.

There are IRC gateways to the newer XMPP MUC protocol, so yes that should be possible...
