Well...feedback...this was basically my first tournament, I'm so busy that rarely can make them =P

Anyways...I think that we need to have it so there is a limit to the number of players per team, and no switching teams around...

There was a lot of chaos and confusion, we couldn't find CT for our 2nd match, and we had to pick up many different players for the matches...we only had 4 at the start of the day lol.

Also, there has to be a way to make sure that only people who are in the tournament can access the server, or give the people playing the server pass, because in our first match against !LOL! in the bugfarm server, random players would come in every 2 minutes, and we'd have to start a kick poll to make them leave...sometimes they would come back, and sometimes there were so many random other players that we could not kick them before the next match began.

Otherwise, though, I enjoyed it, although there ended up being 7 teams, not 8, and things were posted on the wiki that were confusing, such as maybe going to 5v5's and having 16 teams, and stuff like that.

Overall, it was a lot of fun, a good experience, and if this sort of thing happens again I'd definately do it! =)

Oh, and also, I edited the wiki to show the scores of the final match, and to clear the confusion of the WS vs. CT game.

Before critisizing the details, I'd like to thank the driving force force behind the tournament (2020 - who else) for making this great gathering possible. We know you didn't do it alone, but I think it is safe to say that without you, we would not have been having such a good time tonight.

That beeing said, I think a few things could be improved:

1. The not-so transparent pairing selection caused some discontent. For instance, SL's quarter final opponent was unhappy to have to play one of the strongest teams, while other teams got ahead by mere virtue of showing up (because their opponents did not) or winning against lesser opponents. While such a thing can proably not be avoided, a more transparent pairing selection could help here.

2. Communication. I had to wait about 1.5 hours between the quarter- and semifinal. I do not know precisely what the problem was, but it seemed like an eternity - especially considering that for all we knew the match could have started any minute. I think it should be possible to get accurate information about the progress of the tournament any minute. Instead of everyone assembling at a meeting place that is simply not there most of the time, I propose to use a generally accesible, persistent means of communication for things of general interest (a wiki page, or this board). That would also provide players with news as the thing progresses.

3. Schedule. Although we played one round less than originally planned (due to fewer teams), it took more than an hour longer. Allocate more time in the future?

4. Protected playground: Random players joining teams during a competitive match are a nuisance. It appears servers used for the competition were not always flagged as such. Would it be feasible to lock access to a server by other means than filling all player slots with kind spectators?

5. Playback for the masses. One of the goals of holding tounaments is to attract more players. But once the tournament is over, nothing reminds us of what has transpired. (I heard quite a few people asking who won the spoon, for instance.) What about recording the games, and publishing the recording on the net? Perhaps some spectator skillfully maneuvering the free camera? (Sorry, live video feeds seem beyond our technical capabilities at the moment ;) )

Hoping for many more tournaments

im good with everything i think ladle should happen again i just want set teams i kinda think that going into bugfarm and recruiting 5 min before match starts or picking up players that didn't want to join a team is kinda crap

Except when you only have 4 players on your team in the first place :D

Well IMO that is that team's fault.

I'm not opposed to teams recruiting players in the last minute, provided that every player plays for at most one team during the tournament.

However, I dislike having to wait for the other team while it's recruiting. IMHO, teams should make a stronger effort to show up on time. And if they have only 6 players, then its 6 vs 6 not "wait while we recuit another two".

nice feedback
and overnight realised that it might get lost here in the forums

wonder if i could ask you to visit
http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php/Ladle_Feedback

i agree with all the comments made
@psyko: i agree that teams should be organised beforehand with only a few places left for last-minute substitutions... how about some kind of pre-grid teamroom like in the film...?
@upacreek: without last-minute mixing of teams, we would have to wait an eternity for all teammates to turn up on time
@upacreek: pity CT didn't turn up
@upacreek: yes, it is annoying to have players come into the server mid-game... we have a partial solution with players having to join a team whereas before it happened automatically... the only current stable solution is filling the server 8v8... hence the need for last-minute additions
@meriton: (1) it is transparent, just confusing heheheh.... team-captains just paired off... I would like it to have been done altogether with no-one leaving the T-room until everyone was ready and happy... The idea behind self-sorting is that teams pair up with appropriate opponents... after all LOD did not have to play against SL... I had set up provisional brackets randomly in the event of mass-disorganisation and bizarrely it matched the quarters with the exception of AW playing CT and Speeders getting bye... weird...
@meriton: (2) I tried to use the wiki for centralised purposes, but for the challenges we need something with a faster turnaround... something like a chatroom... but it was messy... sorry about the delay: it was because WS and LOL were late in their quarter final game... I think it is all to do with timing and if players don't stick to it, we are done for... check out the idea of a pre-grid assembly room where you stick your name on the team and when both teams assemble, you are notified whichever server you are on and you port to a server with your team against another team -- all at once as if by magic... is this possible...?
@meriton: (3) matches lasted about 1/2 an hour... it is to do with the balance of flexibility between matches and set structure which is too constraining... the reason it worked was because we could have last-minute team-changes and if we stuck to original team rota's I think only speeders would have been able to play and everyone else disqualified hehehe... hence psyko's justified complaint of the other teams' lack of organisation...heheh
@meriton: (4) sounds good... though 8v8 is current solution.
@meriton: (5) the beauty of this game is participation and not spectating... recordings don't juice me, however... I like the idea of mirrored servers... Last night, if Bugfarm was mirroring the events at Z-man's Ladle, we could have had an entire server of spectators watching the final, but that's an admin choice and not even sure if it is possible with the way the servers are linked up currently...

this discussion will be lost in the forums so please do post your ideas on the wiki
we need a format from which we can build things
so that as meriton says
we can view the games
there is more a climax
and we can learn how to make the next one better

when it comes down to it
the more self-organised each player it
with their timing
then the whole thing starts getting smoother and more exciting...
if
we have the system to support this degree of self-organising

thanks for taking part...
i enjoyed the playing :)
but the organising the T-room thing was a bit distracting :?
