Priorities?
Priorities?
Now that everybody has a C++ compiler...on to the next step = picking areas of interest.
I spent time reading the existing posts in Armagetron Development.
Here is what seems to be sticking out:
1. Anti-Stat Whoring Code
2. Spam Protection Code
3. Lag Reduction Code
4. Remote Server Administration Code
5. Password Authentication Code
6. HUD Development
7. Weapons
8. Removing Instant Win Zone or changing it to Instant Death Zone (Completed)
9. Over/underpasses Code
10. More complicated arenas - maybe levels?
11. Respawning code
So, are some of these still problems? I personally know that some of these have been addressed. Well, which ones interest you?

Personally, I'm interested in password authentication code. I would like to write some mathematical equations for encrypting armagetron username and passwords. Then, people would need to enter a username and password to enter a server.
However, my choice shouldn't prevent anybody else from choosing this area.
And last thing, nobody is expecting anybody to be a master program. This should be more fun than anything. A chance to "tinker" with a game we all love.

That's what I'm interested in... I have some ideas for all of them, and some of them I've already worked on.

Well, there is an old game called "Scortched Earth" where you start out with a certain amount of money to purchase weapons. I think something like this in armagetron would be fun.
There could be MIRVs, ICBMs, Stingers, and "voodoo" - voodoo would be where you just press a key and the persons bike explodes without any apparent reason...lol.

2 cents:
i'm really opposed to weapons, i think it would destroy the game. i'd rather have stuff that embellishes the nature of the game as it is, stuff like over/underpasses, more complicated arenas, different grid shapes (pentagonshaped flat one and tubular). i also think the respawning idea is a very good idea even though i just end up being called cruel when i say so.
the point with respawning + inital immortality is:
- ppl will only have to wait like 30 econds before the can play again - no long waits for playing
- initial immortality allows completely random starting positions. this is something manuel moos has been trying to figure out + it will make each game an even more unique experience & increase playability
this should be options of course - all our changes should be optionable! if we don't make it optionable we will only destroy the game for most players
i think we should stick with the idea the game is based on already and not radically change the game (that would be weapons again imo): it's kill-by-racing and not kill-by-weapons... i don't want another (boring) first person shooter game - it kinda kills all need for the type of skill armagetron is based on as it is now
ok it almost became a rant, sorry, just have a strong opinon on the weapons-thingy

yeah graphics is a point, we should modify the code so it will accept blender-created models (road kill and i have looked a bit at making models but it would be best if the game accepted blender models as not everyone can afford 3dstudiomax... and since both armagetron and blender is open source/gnu gpl it would be perfect)
p.s. i'm not saying we should remove support for the .ase files

Re: Priorities?
Spam Protection Code
Of the things on the list, this one seems the quickest to accomplish.
Password Authentication Code
This is really high on my list. We should be able to use one of several encryption routines to handle passwords.
Remote Server Administration Code
After password authentication is available, server administrators should be able to assign an access level to different users. Separate remote commands could be available for different users.
HUD Development
I still have some ideas here. =)
Respawning code
This is a GREAT idea. I see this as a big enhancement to the game.
