i just think it is a shame

and rather than posting some kind of argument here on the forum
i would like to shift focus to a discussion on the wiki...

I joined team somethingsomething, since all the other teams seemed full (plus I'm not a great fan of the name Smegheads). Lackadaisical, is that alright?

Heh, your_mom told me about the name thing and anjori agreed that he'd like it changed. I'll put a temporary name and then we can pick a new one. But to be honest, as much as I'd like you on my team, nemo, it would probably help to get some of these other teams going if people looking for a team looked at them. :)

Edit: Ok, I renamed it to Knights of Ni, but that should be considered a "what if" name. If y'all don't like it, put up suggestions or something. It's not that big a deal to me, it's just a name. :)

Um, sure, the brackets thing makes sense to me. What do you do with the results? You wind up with 4 winners, how do you match them up? Is it the winner of the top bracket (the one with the highest-ranked from the first round) plays the one under him, or does he play the lowest bracket (the one with the two teams ranked in the middle)?

What about the dates? I made up May 30 and took 2020's date. The April 16-May 30 gives a month and a half for the first round to play. Is that too long? We could reasonably play the whole first round in a week, but that could be tight scheduling. Maybe 2 weeks are better?

We can't count on the armabot having anything extra to it by then, but I can work on it. I'd like to know it'll be used that way, though. :)

I think I finally grokked the SPOON/LADLE/BOWL progression. There's only ever supposed to be one spoon, right? So if we do this again, it'll be the ladle? If that's right, and I'd like someone (particularly 2020, I wrote in the wiki talk page too) to confirm that I'm not smoking crack this time before I merge the artemis_crap I made back to the main SPOON stuff.

If you need an extra server to run this thing, I can offer the Crazy Tronners Server for use. It is on a server farm with a 100Mbit connection.
It has some crazy maps on there at the mo. But can easily be changed back to good ol cvs fortress settings for the duration.
Its called Crazy Tronners Wild Fortress if you wanna test it out.

There's a page to put it on. :) And thanks! Um, if you haven't registered on the wiki and don't want to, say so and I'll be happy to put you on the page. It just needs three pieces of information, the server admin's name, the server's regular name, and the name the server will be under during the competition.

Added Z-Man's Spoon Fortress to the list.
Here's a special thread on it so this one does not get flooded with demands to revert my retarded changes :)
Hmm, if the mode is a longer tournament, I may be able to play after all...

We COULD use LC Fortress... It can only take up to 6 people, unless Gomes and I can think of something.

Also, the settings are much different in side the LC fortress... (plan on adjusting them) Shouldnt that become a problem? Shouldn't there be a certain set of rules and regulations for settings for the servers?

Ok, timeframe. What's the time frame? 2020 set the date for April 15/16 intending to have the whole thing play in one day. Can we do that? If so, how will it work?

Now, I don't want to color the discussion, but I want to pursue the thread still a bit.

I'm thinking we could reasonably set April 16 as either a first round deadline or a playoff deadline in a round robin setup. If we do a round robin setup. In that case we'd want to close team signup somewhere around the end of March, which is less than a week away.

Or we could really focus on getting it all done in those two days, all the games played. If that's what we do, can it be done?

I think the best way we can go around this is make this more of a Month Long event.

We match up the teams, the teams then discuss what time and day is most conveinient for them. But have about 2 weeks to get this done. Who ever wins, wins. Every match should have a time limit of 2 weeks to be done, if nothing happens, both teams will be dropped.

How about that?

Seems like in order to figure out what the time commitment is, we need some idea how long a game is.

I'm personally in favor of KamP's 2 out of 3 matches constituting a game. In fact, he beat me to the suggestion, but I was going to throw it out there myself. :) If we do that, for the teams there are, the games are likely to last by themselves up to 2 hours each. I can't commit to 6 hours a day, which would be 3 games.

(I know the lobster guys have looked at the teams, but have the rest of you? They're all looking like good teams. Of course the team that may soon be formerly known as the Knights of Ni look like the best team...)

We could just do 1 match. 2020 suggested each game would be about 20-30 minutes. In that case, playing 7 games is doable, because you're only looking at 3.5 hours, which I can do if scheduled carefully. Practically that probably translates to 4 or 4.5 hours, though. You have to wait for other teams to finish before you can play them, allow room for people to make mistakes, eat meals, go to the bathroom, etc.

Your_mom suggested we do a week of games, then a week off, then "finals" on the 16th. I'm not sure what he meant by finals even though he probably told me. Is it like the last round of the round-robin tournament? The round that decides final placing? Makes sense to me. That's what I've been calling the championship. :) (every other team would still have to play, they have their own ranks to determine in that round)

We could skip the regular season part and just put teams in brackets arbitrarily. Yet another option for setting up the brackets is to have 2 members of each team meet on my server with one of the 4-team fortress maps and have them play a match. Top gets first, 2nd gets second, and so forth. Then set the brackets up from two matches where equal ranking in one match lines up with the other match at equal ranking. Can't use bye games to balance it if we lack a power of two, though.

I like mom's suggestion. Games would start on April 1, making March 31 the last day for team signup. Finish them up by April 10, then run finals the following weekend, which is 2020's target week. Then everyone's just committing to 1 game on that weekend, and the teams would schedule it amongst themselves, still. Maybe offer a grace period if a team doesn't make it, don't want to forfeit the final round after all.

I'd like to have it done with by before May, if that influences anyway. I sort of like the play it all in the April bit what not that Lucifer just suggested.

Ok, so combining everything so far, I come up with this:

Deadline for team signup: March 31
Games start: April 1
Deadline for game scheduling: April 14
Games end (except finals): April 25
Final round: April 30

THe only catch is, I don't personally like that schedule. :) I'd prefer something more like:

Games run April 1-15, this is the seed round.
Playoffs (including finals) run April 16-30. Champ will be declared on/before May 5 (Cinco de Mayo).

In both schedules the presumption is that 1 game = 3 matches, winner is best 2 matches.

2020 really wants us to work out a way to play it out in one day. How many people can play it in one day and what would the games look like?

For game rules:

If we do best 2 of 3 matches, how do we handle the border case where a match is literally 98 100, the server declares the Knights of Ni the winner, and then Lucifer crashes accidentally, awarding the other team 2 points, bringing the score to 100 100? I'm in favor of sticking with the server's announcement, and declaring the server the referee. This will probably yield games that run 1-2 hours in length.

Shorter games can be had if we go with 1 game = 1 match. The shortest game then will probably be around 5 minutes, with the longest stretching to 25-30 minutes.

Finally, if team signup has a deadline, and it's currently at March 31 (being the earliest day suggested, it's easier to move it back, but moving it forward really sucks), then we kinda need to know what's going on within a few days before reaching that deadline.

edit: Oh yeah, I rolled the Artemis_* pages I made into the SPOON pages. Since I figured out there's only supposed to be one spoon and all (and I stopped using Konqueror, which ran slower than dirt on the wiki).
