My mom used to make this thing with pineapples on top of spam, all of it baked together.

It was disgusting. I developed a thorough dislike of spam. My wife suggested early on that spam was cheap and we should start eating it, I told her "If you ever buy spam and expect me to eat it, I'll leave you." That's the only thing I've ever seriously threatened to leave her over, heh. She could screw around and I'll find a way to forgive her, but the devil forbid she should ever make me eat spam.

I read in a book that the origin of the name Spam was in World War 2. The baked Spam was fairly new when war broke out. Jay Hormel had a factory which produced it. But when the US got stuck in WW2, Hormel got his part of war production. The production doubled in '42 compared to '39 production. Over a million and a half pigs died for it, A YEAR.
Every US soldier got spam with them, and they began to dislike it. Though they still got it with them... Though, the German POW's loved it and when they met the Russians, they also loved it. But the Americans were fed up by it. They even made a sarcastic song about it, containing the lines: "We've had it with spaghetti, with chili and rice. We all remember a bright day we only had it twice." And Uncle Sam became Uncle Spam.

So: The Americans didn't want it but got it anyway: Spam!

(I indeed didn't like the sketch so much :P, I like the Germans in Fawlty Towers way more, but that's off topic :P)
