Armagetron Media on YouTube

Post by Kronkleberry »

Posting here because I feel like these forums get the occasional lurker who might be looking for a taste of light cycle nostalgia.

Something to know is that it is 2023 and Armagetron is still played every day. We have pickup 6v6 Fortress and Sumo quite often, and Yellow Sub has its traffic as well. If you feel now like you're missing out you can join us at discord.gg/dcpaauj :D

If you're just here to relive some of your days on the grid, some of us have made some content for you. I recently compiled some highlights into this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhn9rJt ... roductions

The rest of my youtube channel can be found here.

Syllabear streamed and commentated some major tournaments.
Ampz has made some compilations.
Nanu has a youtube channel with some compilations on it.
Noodles also has made a video.

You might recognize some familiar names in these videos; a good chunk of players have made some kind of return since the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, and quite a few have actually stuck around. Hope this post serves you with any dose of this game you might be looking for.

Maybe add this short video to the list, taking a look at Armagetron from the historical perspective of snake-like games.

Last month, Koala (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyS7qa ... ue87PzNUZA) made something quite impressive:

"tron plays but they get increasingly more satisfying"

Invidious: https://invidious.lunar.icu/watch?v=ER3eMxqQWHU

That really shows the tension of a Fort battle well.

Ellis opened up a fine channel that might gather some views for Armagetron. For some reason, the game is gaining in popularity right now.

Ellis YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmA0Mo ... 8gyYiwY_6Q
Invidious: https://yt.artemislena.eu/channel/UCmA0 ... 8gyYiwY_6Q

I'd wish Ellis to use the home-made breakcore music in a future video. And maybe an ASMR video of a really courageous player using triple-binds. That must be looking wild!

I'll be revisiting this topic soon, but in short, are there downloadable videos I can use when making a YouTube video? I'm about to review TRON, the movie, and I'd like to drop in a lot of arma footage and some discussion...

There are so many talented video makers in the Armagetron playerbase.
Could someone make a video about setting up double-/triplebinding? Maybe discussing with an expert player how to use it, pointing out the advantages and looking at some in-game situations of various servers.
I feel there are a handful of players who would like to get more technical, but there is actually very little video material online. The question "what is doublebinding" appears really often in the chat now.

There is a keybind video on retrocycles.net which might help:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joqO_mJA1GA&t=58s

Those videos are basic overviews about a minute long. When it comes to experts, I've found that some amazing players have absolutely bonkers keybindings, but they make sense to them and are comfortable. Really there are just these basic keybinding bullet points:
  • Should left/right keys be on each hand or separate hands?
  • Can you glance and brake easily? (Some amazing players don't glance or brake.)
  • How comfortable are these settings after playing for hours?
That's it.

Ok, excellent video, but no surprise why I didn't find it (maybe because of using Invidious?). No, it looks like this video is lacking a description, probably even keywords or tags. Author, please stuff these it there: double bind, doublebind, triple bind, triplebind, keyboard, armagetron, retrocycles, tron game, tactics, get good, how to win.

Too big of a shame if those videos exist but can't be found.

The video does have tags and I can put the script in the description if you like, but the transcript is already crawled by YouTube. The video already has some of those tags, but I don't think some make sense to include. If you want to give me copy to add for all the videos I'll gladly add it.

But how can the transcript be reliable for finding a video? So much clutter!

In the case of the keybindings video, the "key term", for example doublebinding, wasn't named specifically. But this is what new players ask for and will search for.

Could we do a little experiment? See how much of a difference the description actually would do.

Proposal:
This video helps with setting up the control keys for Armagetron / Retrocycles. It also explains "doublebinding", the technique of using two keys for each direction, as well as the more extreme "triplebinding", three keys for each direction.

Could you add it to the keybindings video?

Done. I added tags for "double binding" and "triple binding" (with spaces). Let me know what else we can do. Being a super old guy and expert at finding stuff I don't really have a sense of how people find information these days.
