noob needed help, docs fixed it...

Post by Unknowable »

First of all, wow - this game is awesome. :D

Brand new, installed last night. Went to play today, could NOT figure out how to control the bike. Tried random keys (like arrow and numpad keys) - no help. Went thru the settings that I saw (including keyboard config in the main settings,) still didn't see anything. Went thru the readme, then found this forum. Searched for "keyboard", "key binding", "controls", whatever I could think of, only got tens of thousands of hits. :P

Then saw "Additional Armagetron Links":

http://sourceforge.net/projects/armagetron/ the SourceForge project site (all the code as well as some forums + +)

In there near the top is DarFuN's post on the official documentation where I was easily able to find default key bindings and how to change them:

Obviously I'm well aware that reading the docs are useful, I only wanted to point out that it took a fair bit of time to figure out how to control the bike. From a noobie point of view, I'd consider making the default controls much easier to find.

Either way, looks like an awesome game and I'm sure I'll get years of play from it. Many thanks go to the developers, and just as much to the mods here: thank you both for the many hours of work you put into making this a wonderful experience. You're awesome. :)

While it's not the current stable release, 0.4 has a tutorial that will help familiarize you with the controls. There's also pop-up text that will help remind you of keybinds.

Wow cool, thank you Light, that's really helpful. Once I found how to set controls inside Player Setup in the main menu (by DarFuN's post in the sticky "Additional Armagetron Links") it became a lot easier. Really all I needed to learn to play is just left, right, and brake. I'm sure as I advance I'll put time into learning macros or whatever.

But thank you again for your help, Light. You're the type of person that keeps this game (and the forum) alive and well. :)

@Unknowable

First of all, welcome to the game!

Secondly, I should mention that we have a Discord server, I don't know whether you know that yet or not. It's not a complete replacement for these forums but it is useful for many things. I can't remember the exact link, if you're interested I'm sure someone will post it here. Also, the wiki is possibly our best source of information. It is being tidied up and improved by some players too.

See you on the grid!

Hey Monkey, what's up man! :D

Discord server, good idea. I doubt if I'll go there though, 'cause really all I wanted was to learn how to control it for the casual gaming that I play.

I absolutely *had* to reply when I saw your nick though - awesome.

*grin*

I just had to mention that an old favorite party game of mine used to be Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, which I played back in the day on PS2. *Excellent* party game even for people who hate video games. Up to 8 players on screen at at time (monkeys of course,) and the controls are analog stick for movement plus one button to hit the other monkeys with. :D Super easy for anyone, super fun to watch your monkey beat all the other monkeys.

Sorry to waste your time with such a useless post, but I just had to mention it when I saw your nick. Thanks for the tips, Monkey, and take it easy all day man.

To add to Monkey's response a little.

The Grid Discord Channel - https://discord.gg/dcpaauj (the most popular I believe, and the one I pay attention to)
Armagetron Noobs Discord Channel - https://discord.gg/SF7eHmq

Lightron Discord Channel - https://discord.com/invite/rCeuXhMW (this is my own, which is mostly not used much for text chat, but if you need me for problems with wiki, resource server, etc. - it's easier to get my attention here)

Armagetronad Wiki - http://wiki.armagetronad.org

In my signature, you'll also find links to the client and server, resource repository, a web-based server browser, etc.

Alright cool, thanks Light. Those are some really helpful links and they all get bookmarked now.

I actually only replied because of your sig. The first time you helped me out I replied quickly, then later noticed how you have like, everything in your sig - *super* helpful. Even when you're not trying, the sig helps noobs out like me, so thanks again for being willing to help out.

BTW, I noticed that ppl get some help here on compiling for whatever distro they're running, which is just absolutely off the chain. Keep it up everybody, we all started somewhere! :D
