Quick question about Windows (not the glass ones)

Post by ConVicT »

I use windows 7 and I probably wouldn't have even noticed this if I didn't happen to get a low volume episode of TWD. But why is it that everytime I log on to both my computers, the speaker volume is always set to 98%?
We can exclude that anyone is playing a prank because only I have the password.

Btw, I have googled this and I couldn't find any answers.
Not much of a big deal but just... WHY?

Couple solutions:

0) check to see if this is some kind of setting in your control panel audio settings - also check to see if there is something specific to your computer (like HP software on an HP computer) that affects the volume setting like that at startup (uninstalling that software would work) - also check to see if changing the application (window, game, video, etc..) changes the volume setting at all - also check to see if the volume setting changes if you plug in headphones as a headphone jack has a detector in it to disable built-in speaker output (some models - and check to see if your speakers themselves are plugged into a headphone jack).

1) create a startup script (batch / command prompt file) that adjusts the volume to what you want at startup. This doesn't fix anything, but it deals with it.

2) uninstall the sound drivers you are using (device manager) and restart the computer. On startup, you will be prompted to install them again. Cross your fingers and hope for the best.

3) Some other technical solution too complex to get into right now (actually looking into and fixing or replacing the software causing the issue - similar to 2)

4) use an amplifier, something that you can adjust the volume of on the outside (so you can ignore the digital setting by the OS) - if your computer always starts up at 98% volume, then you can keep your volume knob on the amplifier at the appropriate place so it's not too loud or too quiet.

Unfortunately I can't help you much more because I don't use Windows 7.
Hard to say what it could be just from your post; I hope (and suspect) it's just a control panel setting or hardware issue (like the headphone jack detection kicking in), because then it's easy to solve.

All in all good luck! I'll help out how I can.
