Re: New Fake Accounts
I don't think we got 4000 wiki users either. Or those 6600 forum users.
Re: New Fake Accounts
The signup process already requires a captcha to be completed, and a confirmed email address. I don't know any other methods we could additionally use to stop spammers from creating accounts. Maybe some question/answer form? There's a plug-in for that, but I'm not really annoyed by the creation of these accounts. The important thing is that they shouldn't be able to edit/create pages with spam—there are filters in place that stop that.

Limit the user registration per ip to only one user a day/week/month?dlh wrote:The signup process already requires a captcha to be completed, and a confirmed email address. There's a difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit. Grammar does matter.
Re: New Fake Accounts
Almost all of the registrations use a unique IP.nux wrote:Limit the user registration per ip to only one user a day/week/month?
Re: New Fake Accounts
I take that back. The account creation spam is now annoying.dlh wrote:[…] but I'm not really annoyed by the creation of these accounts.
Maybe $wgAccountCreationThrottle will help, but it requires memcached. We could also require new accounts to be approved.
The spammers are now creating articles with no external links.
Re: New Fake Accounts
Too much hassle if you ask me. Not to mention it wont stop spammers without blocking a legit user every once in a while. I guess the only thing that will work perfectly is disabling the spammers' accounts. Could also make tron-related questions, but even some legit users wont be able to answer them.dlh wrote:We could also require new accounts to be approved.

Depends what you ask, and how.
Suggestions:
"In which year did the original Tron film celebrate its premier? Follow this wikipedia link"
"Who played TRON (CLU; RAM...)?"

Re: New Fake Accounts
any news here? now they're writing huge articles...and it annoys me that the recent changes page has become virtually useless. so it's probably the best to delete all the accounts without contribs, and then the ones with spam contribs.

Re: New Fake Accounts
I think we can assume from that total that there are a lot of fakers and hackers lurking around the corner.
