S.O.P.A
What do you guys think about this? My opinion is that it will be a sad day for the world when somebody gets sued for uploading a recording of them singing a song on something like SoundCloud or Youtube.
Here's a couple links if you don't know what the hell I'm talking about:

You didn't get it; in this case, SoundCloud/YouTube(possibly all of Google) gets shut down. Without a judge even intervening.Clutch wrote:when somebody gets sued for uploading a recording of them singing a song on something like SoundCloud or Youtube.

This has been going on for few months now and they seek a public US vote , you can check this out https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/11/s ... -blacklist
What they will try to do is they will filter websites that have pirated stuff like movies/musics/shows etc.
To be honest why are they making a big deal out of it? if its a p2p case they shouldnt really seek anything its like 2 friends sharing 1 copy of a CD.
Soundcloud and youtube are used for commercial they cant filter them out or bill them. There are thousands of people who promote their work through these sites and that is making profits for them.
Stopping piracy is very hard to do its been their since the start of 90s if not before.

Time to vote for the pirate party. Also to get software patents abolished.
Re: S.O.P.A
I think it really sucks for (example) music artists, imagine how much money they lose because of things like pirate bay but the truth is, people will always find a way to download illegal stuff so I don't think this would really work..
Re: S.O.P.A
Artists who don't own their label don't actually make as much as you think from record salesSlov wrote:I think it really sucks for (example) music artists, imagine how much money they lose because of things like pirate bay but the truth is, people will always find a way to download illegal stuff so I don't think this would really work..

Does this bill have the potential to pass?

oh yeah, as far as I know record labels give the artists certain amout of money to make an album, but then it doesn't really matter if it pays off for the label (if the album doesn't sell well). but if the albums aren't being sold, label is the one on loss so they wouldn't wanna sign the artist again..Hoax wrote:Artists who don't own their label don't actually make as much as you think from record salesSlov wrote:I think it really sucks for (example) music artists, imagine how much money they lose because of things like pirate bay but the truth is, people will always find a way to download illegal stuff so I don't think this would really work..
might be wrong, this is just the stuff I got from a 5 min research few months back..
Re: S.O.P.A
For music artists it does not need to suck. The good ones still can make money in various ways. Go read on Wikipedia what Radiohead did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_RainbowsSlov wrote:I think it really sucks for (example) music artists, imagine how much money they lose because of things like pirate bay but the truth is, people will always find a way to download illegal stuff so I don't think this would really work..
The ones for which it actually sucks are the record companies. But record companies are terribly out of date no matter how you look at it. The record companies complaining about their own demise are like blacksmiths arguing that the car industry has stolen their bread. Also, record companies are not generally known for treating their artists well.

Re: S.O.P.A
Read my comments beginning here. (And if you're wondering, here is the older thread that I referred back to at the end of the first one.) Such redundancy.
It's not just big corporate labels and pop stars that are affected, in fact least of all—although I realize invoking them is an easy sloganeering, rhetorical debate-stopper.
A local record store, ear X-tacy, a well-known local fixture and part of the community, that has been around for 26 years, was considered one of the best independent record stores in the country, which always did great business, employed a lot of people, and supported local and other independent music just recently had to close down. Why? The internet. No rich popstars or corporate labels harmed. A community, culture, and people's livelihoods wrecked.
And how about people become educated on a subject before making speculations and drawing opinions.

I used the search tool to look for something related to S.O.P.A, and didn't find anything. Lucifer's thread was created when I was 10 years old.
Sorry, but I honestly don't give enough of a shit to look through 6 years of posts to spare you reading this
If you weren't talking to me, then I'm sorry.

Re: S.O.P.A
A) Yes, my post was quite obviously directed in part at you, though not exclusively or even primarily.
B) That first post I linked to is from only 6 months ago, and the point of just linking to it was to save myself the redundancy of retyping it all again in giving my response. And I didn't suggest that you or anyone should have dug up the older one, either, which is why I linked to it "if you're wondering."
Question: Did you even bother reading those threads?
C) The final comment wasn't regarding reading this forum, but of doing outside research beforehand. As I've said numerous times, a web forum is just about the last place someone should go to actually learn about anything—besides Armagetron.
And none of it was in any way a comment about simply sparing me having to read all this. (Because, what, all these one- and two-sentence posts are just too much to read? Unlike some of you, I am capable of reading a post that's longer than a paragraph, and without complaining.)
[The preceding comments directed primarily, though not exclusively, at Clutch.]
To reiterate and expand: A person should research a subject thoroughly before developing an opinion on it, and especially before stating or acting on that opinion. An opinion based on ignorance or incomplete knowledge or understanding—in some cases really just a guess—is empty and worthless litter at best, and dangerous at worst. In addition, annoyingly, too many of these sorts of "topical" threads on this forum consist not of debating opinions, but of arguing and correcting false or incomplete facts on which those opinions are based. Differing opinions are fine; differing realities are not.
[SIDEBAR]
Now, if you're too damned lazy or stoned or don't "give enough shits" to do the research on a subject, then don't bring it up—or, especially, form and state an opinion—in the first place. Don't waste our time.
By the way, I'm not saying you need to become an expert on a given subject. Just know what you're talking about with respect to the elements you comment on. As in, don't just guess.
[The preceding section directed at anyone generally, to include but not limited to Clutch.]
You've had the internet your whole damn life, volumes upon endless volumes of information readily, immediately available right at your fingertips, stuff that people my age and older never would have had ready access to. Do you even get that? Use it, for crying out loud! (And stop trying to get other people to do your homework for you.)
[The preceding paragraph directed primarily at anyone who has had the internet for their whole damn lives, or practically so, but doesn't get the significance of that and/or doesn't take advantage of it and/or wastes or abuses it, to include but not limited to Clutch. The sentiment and admonition contained within the preceding paragraph directed secondarily at anyone who hasn't had the internet their whole damn lives, but still fails to utilize it in a redeeming fashion.]

[SIDEBAR]
Can discussing something with others enhance understanding of a subject and one's formulation of an opinion? Yes, sometimes, depending on the quality of that discussion; that's why I bother posting at all, in an attempt to effect that—and also why I watch C-SPAN and listen to NPR, or watch symposiums and such on youtube, heh. But reading comments on a forum doesn't count as research.(Schuman & Presser, 1980) wrote:The majority of people asked their position on a highly obscure bill before Congress gave a "don't know" (DK) response in two different national surveys, but between 25% and 30% offered an opinion. The latter figures dropped to 10% or less when the DK alternative was provided as part of the question. Contrary to findings concerning most issues, more educated persons showed greater willingness to admit ignorance in these cases involving an unknown object. For those persons who did express opinions, more than mere guessing seemed to be involved: respondents appeared to interpret the wording of the question in a way that had meaning for them, and then to express a more general attitude toward that constructed object.
Now, if you're too damned lazy or stoned or don't "give enough shits" to do the research on a subject, then don't bring it up—or, especially, form and state an opinion—in the first place. Don't waste our time.

Re: S.O.P.A
Oh I see. I assumed you mentioned the redundancy because a topic was already made, and you were annoyed you had to read through another one.
And it's not like I wrote some scathing essay that's me talking out of my ass about S.O.P.A. All I said was "My opinion is that it will be a sad day for the world when somebody gets sued for uploading a recording of them singing a song on something like SoundCloud or Youtube." While it wasn't EXACTLY correct, as Epsy pointed out, I think it's a pretty reasonable opinion.

Once more, while your comments were included in my criticism, I wasn't referring exclusively or even primarily to yours. Look at the 3-4 comments that preceded my first post, then look at the bulk of the content of my post (and the posts to which I linked). Figure it out.Clutch wrote:And it's not like I....
