Silent Rule on pickup server

Post by FoFo »

This topic is made with the hope to remove that new silent rule during pickup matches .

I ve heard you guys made it cause people are arguing ingame , im playing since 6 years and it always happened it will always continue, thats how it is, i think silent people ingame is a very bad idea, you did it to punish them but you are punishing the whole community or at least every fortress players.

When you have a problem with someone just ban or suspend him dont react like that you seem like a "dictator" lol , dont forget , armagetron is a game, We all play to have fun and have a good time. You should at least ask everyone or make a vote before doing that.

There are always admins in pickup so if anyone has a problem with 1 player , he should come and tell you , or you should add more admins to control the game but not create that kind of rules who s making pickup boring , even in ladle we dont have that silent thing...

We cant even say wd or hi to other players thats ridiculous, i ve already talked to some admins and im making this post to try to change your mind .

Plz remove this and leave us have fun together .

Cya on the grid.

I agree to fofo, if there is a player that annoys you, you will still be able to contact an admin and report it to him or just silence him locally. Saying hi or wd is part of tron, otherwise we could also play solo games.

I was playing with that rule for last 2 weeks, all I want to say, there was much more fun before. It's really annoying that I need to type /msg every time when I want to say wd.

I agree with what fofo said that this game needs also chatting and we cant make pickups become more serious than ladles if that happens then why do we play ladles for. this could be a good idea for ladle but thats a different story and it might need a discussion regarding it. If someone is annoyed about a specific player they can always silence locally or ask admins to do that if the situation is not acceptable any longer.

I became hesitant after that rule to actually host a new pickup server because i know most players don't really want this silence rule.

I hope this issue can be resolved.

Ill agree that its nice to say "wd" or "nt" to people without having to go the extra step of "/msg" however with the team only chat enabled it gives us the opportunity for more game play and less chatter. Sometimes arguments come up or people trolling other people which can be excessively annoying. Also I've talked through a 1v1 battle but I do agree that when we all talk while people are trying to play it kind of ruins it. If people would act like adults and not start shit then i'd say definitely enable public chat again. I'm sure most of you will agree with that statement.

Ya, the new silent thingy is stupid.

Only team leaders can talk.

You can't even tell an enemy good job or something. You have to pm them...

I told Jip about this when I first noticed it but never got a response.

I actually don't mind the silence, but I'm usually coming from an annoying MegaFort game where I want to smack everyone for their annoying chatter.

The biggest problem is when there are like 4 admins playing and with the other 2 team leaders it's like a little bunch of players can talk and spam whatever they want meanwhile the rest of players have to be silent. I've seen admins talking more during this time than in a whole pickup game in the past. It's jsut dumb. All or nobody, that's it.

I agree and I raised the issue multiple times to be given the reason : "if you don't like it, don't play". So I don't. :/

Note to anyone who dislikes chat. Local silence. text_out 0. I use these all the time when people chat, why can't you?

First of all:
I came up with the silent settings, not to annoy or punish you all but to protect those players who got annoyed by the spam - and no, it was not only me. I wanted to see, if the game quality improves with more silence and it really did. The matches became more competetive and the playing was more fun.
Though I agree, it is more fun in general when you are able to chat.

But the questions are:
Is the silence destroying pickup games? No, it improves the game quality!
Is too much annoying chatter destroying pickup games? Yes, it can destroy some matches.

It always was the aim from the admins to provide a platform for competetive matches. So lets just figure out a way where most people feel comfortable with. I will enable public chat for the next few days and will run a vote about it then.

Also, we had a pretty constructive discussion tonight in #armagetron.pickup where we figured out different possibilities.

- enable public chat only for referee and captain
- enable public chat for everybody
- give the referee (and captain?) the access_level to change ACCESS_LEVEL_SHOUT
- give everybody the possibility to run a vote about it

Seriously, silencing team mates localy in a team game can't be the right way.

Well I can't really explain why, but if I feel like I'm gagged I cannot enjoy a game, and if I don't enjoy something I won't try. There must be a better way.
