I think I'd rather see a tournament in the US to determine who will be on the US team, and the US only having one team, and anybody who doesn't make it to that team has to sit out.

Not a bad idea, but it'd be hard to come up with a good method for competing to find the best team. I was going to suggest that all Americans submit who they think are the 6 best American players, and then tally up the scores to find the top 6 (or top 8 or 10 so that there can be subs). Or, if we want a more specific system, we can 4 votes for best centers, attackers, sweepers, and defenders.

That could easily turn into a popularity contest. How about something like a partner sumo tournament, where the top 3-4 pairs get put on a team together? Or the sumo tournament is used to determine like 2-4 teams that will compete directly for the top slot?

Teamwork is too integral to the game to be choosing a team based on individual players' skills. The team needs to show it can compete as a team, I think.

I don't like the sumo idea. Sumo is different than fortress and I don't think a different hame mode should determine the team.

Yeah, I agree with INW. And I think the top players that are chosen will have enough teamwork skills in general to coordinate with each other. I see teamwork all the time in public servers between people of different clans, often without any communication. So while there are people who play well together, everybody who's decent or better should play well with everyone.

And I don't think a popularity contest would really end up taking place. People know who the good players are. At the very least, the good ones are often the popular ones.
