Wow cyncism is in fashion...though the votes at this time indicates that there are just as many optimists out there...
But anywayz i personally enjoy a good competitive match since you rarely get that from normal play so if i was in that postition i think it'd be fun to have the 3rd vs 4th place match.

There is no point in tron, winning a tron tournament as well then.
It would just delay the tournament and that's not worth it if noone is gonna remember 3rd and 4th place anyway.
It won't delay it if the 3rd and 4th place match is played at the same time as the final.
If there is a 3rd place match it will probably take place while the 1st place match is going on - and I think a lot of people would rather watch that and support their friends than play a low-stakes, low-recognition match. This is a sign of a healthy, supportive community if you ask me.
I have always wondered the same thing.... wouldn't you want a rank of the top 4 clans in a certain game mode?
To all the people saying there's no point .... uh there's no point in any of this, its a game and we play it because we enjoy it. So we should enjoy playing the games regardless. Likewise, a lot of teams want to get better and try winning the next competition, so giving up a match against a top 4 team is losing out in both fun and experience. The teams you beat on the way to your loss are likely the weaker teams and potentially won't offer as much of a challenge and experience as the other semi-finalists.
Also, when a new team faces the best team off the start and keep getting kicked out every competition..it's not in the "interest of the tron community" as someone put it.
For a start, it's not even accurate. The 2nd best team could have been knocked out by the best in the quarter finals.
Anyway, how would you enforce it? It must be voluntary participation, and if half the voters don't want to play in it, you can't force them to play.
We play in a competition to win or get as close to the finals as possible. 3/4 playoff doesn't help towards this goal, that's the reason I wouldn't care.
We tried that in the past iirc and it did not work very well for the reasons already stated. Most players just do not want to play another match after losing and most players do not care about 2nd, so why should they care about 3rd?

For people like me Ladle is pretty late because I go to school the next day. I'd rather go sleep than playing a match for 3rd place/watching finals sry.

Uhh.. have you ever watched the NBA or NHL play-offs (read: Any Bracket)? The second best team could be knocked out in the first round or any other round for that matter.
So far the main reasoning against is that, "there's no point". Everyone would rather be playing in the finals, but that's a pretty lame reason because there's no point to tron either if you put it that way. In the end it's a game we like to play both for fun and competitively otherwise we wouldn't be in the competition in the first place.

No one has yet posted a reason to have 3rd place in a WST. In Ladle, 3rd place would make sense since there is seeding. Your actions this Ladle affect the next (and people still don't want a 3rd place match there... yet). But there is no such thing in WST. All WST's are independent of each other and first place is all that matters. I'd like to see some convincing reason why to have a 3rd & 4th place match. And why stop there? Why not assign places for all the other teams too? Why not have a WST League? (I know why, because no one cares enough. WST is a quick and dirty competition and people aren't as invested as other team sports, including CTF I believe. Though that could change over time.)
You also can't make a comparison between WST and something like the NBA or NHL. Those sports have seasons. There is no WST season. The organization and the stakes are different. Apples and oranges man.
I guess the compromise would be to allow the 3rd & 4th place teams to play voluntarily and post their results on the wiki if they so chose, but they shouldn't be held to it.

Would also like to point out that the people who organize those events in such things as the NBA get paid to do it. The people who organize the WST,TST, and ladle do it for free so if we add such things that means more work for the people organizing the events. Now I can't speak for the other organizers but I don't really see why I should put even more of my time towards something that doesn't matter.
