Well, it's very important, you know. (And, you know, when I make a critical comment like that, it's not like it's incumbent on everyone to subsequently pile on. "OMG how can you not like this?!?!" You all could just leave it alone. If you want to explore it, fine, I'll sincerely reply for conversational purposes. But don't then come back at me like it's my fault you're on about it and it's been made into a bigger deal than it was.)

Hey, like I said, upside is maybe it can satiate all the kids who want more shooting and crap in Arma. Direct them to this stuff instead.

Yeah, well, in the original move, we see three grid games being played, all with different weapons/vehicles. We have disks, the ball thing, and lightcycles. And tanks shooting recognizers (Space Paranoids?) All are within the spirit of the video games of that time: simple. You have one thing that does one thing to the one thing that attacks you. Also, from each of those games, we only see tiny fractions, presenting games with more elements just wouldn't work in a movie. By now, videogames have evolved to more complex interactions. Look at Tron 2.0, even that added more weapons (though, AFAIK, they all sucked compared to a properly upgraded disk). Sure, if TF2 were redesigned from the ground up to fit better with the Tron world, that would be infinitely more awesome than just this new skin. What they did there is far from a perfect fit. But given the source materials they had to work with and the restrictions of only doing a graphical mod (I don't know whether gameplay mods are possible in TF2, but if they are, it's probably hard to find enough players willing to play them), the result is quite excellent.

+1

Take it as a compliment to Tron. Why take it as a compliment, you ask? Please find me the fan made Runescape theme for TF2.

I guess that's the appeal of the original TRON for me; the level of abstraction. When I look at the ring game from the first movie I imagine "Pong" and that's quite a dramatic and exciting interpretation the concept. And even though that sort of thing isn't really possible because of today's realism in games, I still enjoy a good mash-up.

I'll confirm that is true. I refused to use any of the other weapons unless the level forced me to. And I've heard other people say the same thing - the disc rocks and the rest is garbage.

I realised I should probably step back on this a little bit, considering I've got a couple things upcoming that cosmetically mashup Tron with another game—one being the JSRF textures redux, and the other I'll let be a surprise.

Nevertheless, I maintain the concepts of GTA and Tron, at least, are irreconcilable and just...yuck.
