We had an earthquake near us, somewhere between 3.8 and 4.2.
maybe it was derived by some plate tectonics in the ocean? which killed the fish.

apparently the fish and birds aren't in the exact same place.

The fish who died are all of one species, so any kind of poisoning or other sort of effect which would kill all species can't work as a hypothesis.

Large numbers of the species of fish die each year at this time anyway, just not these numbers. Perhaps it had something to do with the severity of the weather, etc.

As for the birds, they say it was fireworks. Who knows.

It was definitely 104,000 separate coincidences.

I live in Louisiana, and I've heard a bit of it. I think it's mostly just Blackbirds (redwings) that have been injured, so it's probably a disease, chemical, or something they ate from the crops.

Lay (or just plain ignorant) speculation is always better than waiting on experts!

(Whether you intended it or not, good example of a god-of-the-gaps argument that underlies many supernatural and paranormal beliefs, appa.)

False. Aliens-of-the-gaps ftw! I never knew that term, though. Very cool.

Yes, yes, remove "god," insert "UFO"—or psychic, or spiritual plane, or ghosts, or whatever. Same faulty reasoning.

Well since there is a gap to be filled, why not fill it with fun ideas? :)

For fun, OK (although I don't find massive death all that funny).

I was just taking an idle Skepticism teaching moment.

"Basic arithmetic," Juliet Lapidos writes. "Estimates depend on three variables: the area of the available space, the proportion of the space that's occupied, and the crowd's density."
