What sport is Football? And Hockey?

If you want to avoid confusion, simply use the internationally recognised terms for each sport.

For clear reference I will use common themes of each sport

Football: Premiership, world cup, FIFA, round ball, only use of feet (except goalkeeper/throwins), most popular sport in the world

Gridiron: NFL, almost exclusively played in the USA, oval shaped ball, rarely use of feet (except running)

Hockey: Not played on ice, second most popular sport in the world, round ball, leg-length wooden sticks with a small end.

I've never heard of the NFL being called "Gridiron" or "Hockey" not being played on ice...interesting. Are you referring to "Field Hockey" or "Polo".

I watch the Patriots play every game and I have never heard that term. Almost every kid in my weight lifting class is on the football team and my weight lifting teacher is one of the football coaches...still haven't heard that term before

Its a USA site so they call it field hockey, but honestly when they invented it, they called it hockey, so adding an extra name because someone else invents a sport is stupid. If I invent ice hockey that is played on ice on mountains, and get everyone to call it ice hockey, why should ice hockey have to change its name to flat ice hockey? Thats rediculous.

Also, what is this "European" football you speak of?

Americans call it football only.

But see down here, calling it football is enough. There isn't any other form of football here to adding the word "gridiron" would just complicate things and waste a hint of energy in saying.
