Yeah, both were fine. I silenced xyron earlier, too. He should be used to it :)
The point is that one wasn't fine, isn't it? Just because you can say sorry afterward doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to silence anyone that annoys you. In my opinion /silence becomes a weapon for players to take their aggression out. Out of curiosity, who else was silencing other than INW and Zad-Min?

Can we make a Ladle server that sends SILENCE_DEFAULT 1 to the client? Then it would be the player's responsibility to manage who they want to hear from. Problem solved.

Could be potentially hazardous if a teammate enters midmatch. You would need workarounds.

Ok, full disclosure:

Code: Select all

bugfarmer@vs187011:~/tournament/var/bugs/2010-12-05-16:33:52$ grep -i remote.*silence bug.log
[4] Remote admin command by Gonzap@forums: silence swiss (that one slipped my attention. swiss hadn't done anything up to that point.
It was well before the first match started.)
[3] Remote admin command by Z-Man@forums: silence xy (was being mean to theroze in German, I didn't know it was xyron)
[20] Remote admin command by Jip@forums: silence sylla (for repeatedly talking in public)
[9] Remote admin command by INW@forums: silence xy (for being annoying, mistaking him for a spectator;
a mistake xy has to take partial blame for, not wearing is team tag)
[9] Remote admin command by INW@forums: silence sylla (for repeatedly talking in public)
[3] Remote admin command by Z-Man@forums: silence appa (for repeatedly talking in public)
Now, before we all descend on Gonzap, Jip and INW for being powerhungry jerks (not really), let's remember that being silenced does not interfere with your ability to play at all. Team chat still works. We should get to an official consensus about how much public talk should be tolerated from spectators. Is between rounds OK? Or just between matches? Or none at all, bar "invite me!" cries from registered players?

What I'm more concerned about was this:

Code: Select all

bugfarmer@vs187011:~/tournament/var/bugs/2010-12-05-16:33:52$ grep -i demoted bug.log (cropping those where an accidental promotion was cut down again)
[6] luiso@ct/senior has been demoted to "Shunned" by order of Desolate@forums.
[3] Desolate@forums has been demoted to "Authenticated" by order of Z-Man@forums.
<after logging in and out again, took me a bit to adapt the config>
[6] luiso@ct/senior has been demoted to "Shunned" by order of Desolate@forums.
Minimum access level to play is 15. Demoting locks you out of the game, it's an effective ban (until you reauth). luiso/beer was a registered player. So WTF was that for?

Cheers Z-man and all the other admins who host the tournament, I really enjoyed playing in it (and watching it too!), and gz to the defending champs!

Is there a possible way to maintain the /msg when ur silenced? This way players who are mistaken for spectators can /msg to their buddies to get invited. Players filter out the fakes by their personal silence options.

Or something like:

/silence_default 1 - but everyone wearing X-tag and auth 7+.

You still can message teammates/other spectators. If no admin is there to unsilence you, there should be someone willing to speak up and get you invited.

I don't think any public chat should be allowed by spectators even between rounds or matches. TBH, the most chat on a team comes between rounds or matches and if spectators are talking, it just gets in the way. Against DA I think, it was a solid 2 minutes in between the matches when we couldn't start because the two teams were talking...well their team was actually team chatting and out team was just stalling lol. :/

Just a joke, I was really just following k-yo, as he was demoting Puuquie before I did anything. There was no harm intended, beer is a friend of mine.

That was just K-Yo being confused about/experimenting with access levels, I think:

Code: Select all

[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been promoted to "Team Member" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been demoted to "Authenticated" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been promoted to "OP-ed-5" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been demoted to "Authenticated" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been promoted to "Shunned" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been promoted to "Fallen from Grace" by order of K-Yo@forums.
[14] Puuquie@ct/senior has been promoted to "Team Member" by order of K-Yo@forums.
Also note how the joke (if it was one) ends at "Team Member" level, not "regain own privileges taken away by humorless server owner and start over again". There is a well documented and accepted way to joke with admin commands: put a space before the /. Lol, " /admin KILL K-Yo".
