Re: A lot of new people?
Shrunk is gone? I thought I saw it the other day when I had a couple minutes to fool around.
Ya, I remember you had specific tastes in regards to what you play, you should check out some sumo
servers. They are always a little fun, minus the double bind spammers.

Re: A lot of new people?
The legitimate Shrunkland is down at the moment. There's a fraudulent server called Shrunklandz, ending with a white 'z,' that a couple jackasses from a malicious clan put up for no other purpose but to "troll" me. You'd be good not to patronise it.
With respect to the sumo servers, I can't really stand those. Two things: 1) Inexplicably, like fortress servers they all have the same damn physics. I still don't know why. Boring. 2a) They all have the same type of scoring, awarding most points for zone conquering rather than core dumps, which leads to 2b) everyone just staking out a section of the zone, self-boxing, and noodling around in there waiting for others to crashup. Boring.
And while up until now I've advocated someone making a sumo server with points for core dumping only, now it seems that would be a lost cause, because evidently the pathology is set. I checked out that 'Empha's Sumo Bar' earlier this evening (in response to this), and near as I could tell, it only awards points for core dumps. Nevertheless, every round everyone does the self-boxing deal. Even when they have an opportunity they seem pathologically resistant to engagement. For example, most rounds I spawned facing the center of the zone. The player to my right spawns perpendicular and along the edge. Every round we'd approach one another, and never once would whomever was in that position engage me; they just turned to their right to set up their box. Seems to me they could keep driving straight and cut me off, or at least squeeze me against the player on my left, but nope, gotta make that box and noodle around.
Anyhoosywhatsit.

Re: A lot of new people?
empha's awards for conquers too but it doesn't display on the screen since it's really annoying at start..
Re: A lot of new people?
Nope, Empha's server gives points for zones, but because it caused so much spam when it was up, with up to 12 players in a zone at one time, Empha took those console messages down.

Re: A lot of new people?
Oh. I donut do mafs 2 gooid. And just didn't bother following the actual scores. My bad, homie. Well, anyway, I'm betting most people would still do it. I suppose an element of it may also be the resulting nature of the limited/crowded space.
By the way, what's the purpose of the custom maps for a square arena? Just the spawn points? And why are those sumo arenas always so huge, anyway? Don't ya know that hurts framerate?

Re: A lot of new people?
I agree that camping is lame but you have to admit everybody do it (some more or less) because at the end sumo is about surviving in the zone so of course there will be camping

Re: A lot of new people?
Yes, that's what I said, bud. (Although, I don't agree with the use of the term "camping.") It is what it is by its very nature of design, and some people obviously like doing it, but I don't.
It's why I've also never liked regular servers with infinite walls, a win zone, and round survival points (especially when they exceed core dump value)—because they invariably result in that sort of preservationist gameplay—play which is further aggravated by high rubber, brakes, low cycle_delay, and negative 'suicide' points. (In other words, the MBC model.)

It looks that way, but the spawns are set so that the player driving straight towards the center is always ahead of those that spawn going towards his tail.Phytotron wrote: For example, most rounds I spawned facing the center of the zone. Phytotron: I'm not sure if it's still up, but you should check out R's no rubber sumo. Really fun server and hardly any camping. People were constantly going at each other because it was hard for them to maze successfully without dying. You may not like it, but I think you might end up enjoying it

A part of me doubts he'd enjoy it that much,
but another unrelated part of me is very interested in co-developing a sumo config with you Phyto. PM me and we could get started exchanging ideas.

Y'all working together on a server would probably end up neat. I doubt he'd like the scoring system, just the gameplay better.

Re: A lot of new people?
Ya thats why I played shrunk the most even if it was an idle session of attempting to sober up before passing out against the bots, while listening to music.
I thought I would like some dogfight, but some of the rules blow me away. Besides the double triple quad bind spam, they close, grind double grind and cap it off at a turn but its wrong if I turn around and go out the backdoor?
Sumo is bearable, even with the people who camp(or box whatever). When I played a lot there was only a few people who I couldn't just drive in kill and drive out. I'll try anything as long as there are decent people who have something interesting to say from time to time.

Re: A lot of new people?
Yeah, unfortunately, I don't care for that, either. The ironic thing about the "no rubber" deal, at least with the combination of settings you've got, at least when I've played it, is that it often results in the same sort of 'strategies,' if not the specific tactics (e.g., adjusts and 180 grinding), of the high rubber servers (at least those years ago, like MBC; dunno what they're doing these days). Play more-or-less passively, keep leverage and stay to the outside, make humongous boxes, run to the rim. (And throw a fit over "f'in noob gay camper!" at anyone who is inside that aforementioned box and doesn't immediately smack themselves against a wall—despite the fact the boxer has left them more space than he's left himself on the outside.) Finite wall length might reduce some of that. Plus, some specific physics settings I just personally don't care for, like the high speed lacking much dynamic, yadda yadda. And, OMG, lag! (kidding there...sorta
)
Note to a certain element on this forum: This is not to say I don't think a server like Nexus 9 shouldn't exist (as contrasted with the "special game mode" servers). It's merely an expression of personal preference.

Har. Don't get me started on those fools. The whole concept of "dogfight/loose/open" is vacuous at best, in my view. But, I've got plenty about that elsewhere on this forum.Showhealion wrote:I thought I would like some dogfight, but some of the rules blow me away. I might take you up on that, just for the heck of it, and out of curiosity of the experimentation. I dunno. I'll check with you after the weekend.Titanoboa wrote: very interested in co-developing a sumo config with you Phyto. PM me and we could get started exchanging ideas.

I'm actually an old new guy returning to the game.
...if that makes any sense. Strategy-wise I'm still a disaster, slow to make launchers and way too eager to go into the maze to chase down an opponent. I'll get my Tron legs back soon enough.

As it rolls along, what will the Germans do? Flee in terror? Fight a valiant last-ditch effort to stop the invading machine? Or just step aside and let the unsteerable contraption roll on until it bangs into a wall somewhere.
