Hacks: Are They Cheating?

Post by platnicat »

A certain player known as magglass1 has written a modification to Armagetron Advanced that allows him to follow a tail or wall perfectly without dying. While it can be defeated if you use the correct pattern, it also makes the game far less fun, because he refers to anyone (such as myself) with an ordinary skill level as a noob, and he makes many negative comments toward such people. I have asked him many times, both politely and impolitely, to turn it off, but he simply ignores. Is what he's doing OK?
Thanks,

He's told people for a very long time that he used an edit of the source code.

People tend to band together and kick vote him on CTWFUSA because it's just stupid and annoying to have to deal with him sticking to your tail like super glue, not dying, as you do triple and quadruple binds in all directions.

Also Appa, I'm assuming you didn't actually intend on using this? =P

I read about half of it didn't feel like reading it all. Sounds pretty good though.

I didn't buy it, I considered it because it sounded so cool, and I did want him to explain it to me :) And then I was considering trying it out, but it wasn't worth it. I like the game the way it is. People can come here and read what it is and not bug him or anyone else about it.

Yeah, not even sure I would have sold it if you produced some $$$. I'd hate to have tons of noobs running around with it, even though they'd still be easy to kill. It was a challenge to code and I consider using it to be my reward for the time and effort spent.

Talk the server admin into banning him. May he hack or not, the latter is usually enough to justify it. But yes, that is cheating.

Merging threads.

You've put my comments into a thread I didn't want to be a part of. It kinda pisses me off.

I remember when I tried to get in the top 10 of CTWF, this dude was always playing with the perfect turning, I knew he was hacking! Anyways, this may sound really stupid because I have no knowledge of it, but isn't it legal because armagetron is open source?

Completely understand why everyone wants him banned, I'd want that too if he invaded the servers I play in. Maybe something can be done about this, lets avoid hackers getting into armagetron.. I hate games with a lot of unbanned cheaters.
