First Individual Racing Tournament

Post by animuson »

I am officially announcing the first ever Individual Racing Tournament!

Official announcement is now on Tronner.com!
http://tronner.net/tournaments/racing-09-2010
Tronner.com wrote:Here's how it will work:
The tournament will span 10 days, each day a different map playing on the tournament server. Each night at midnight (CST) the server will go up with the map for that date and each night at 11pm (CST) the server will go down to conclude the day and get it ready for the next map. Each user can go to the server and complete the map up to 3 times (dying will also count as one of your turns, so be careful). The server will use all the standard racing settings as used on the Absolute Purity servers. The maps will be randomly (or not so randomly) selected by the administration team.

The list of rules:
- You may only complete each map up to 3 times.
- If you attempt to play after your 3 turns are up, you will be kicked immediately (join in spectator mode).
- Only four people will be allowed to race at once.
- My account will be connected and running into the wall 24/7 to allow players to race any time.
- We will also run a warmup server with the same map that will not count towards times.
- Users will not be allowed to speak at all on the tournament server.
- Only users who are authed will be allowed to race on the tournament server.
- Users found to be using multiple authorities will have ALL of their times disqualified.
- Users will not receive any feedback (time or position) at the end of their races.
- All times will be recorded in a file for later processing.
- An additional 5 spectator slots will remain open to watch the races.
- The maps for future days will not be revealed.
- Staff will not have powers on the tournament server to prevent unauthorized activities.
- Users do not have to complete all 10 maps to receive a final rank.
- Only the top 100 users in the tournament will receive a rank (if we get that many participants).

You'll notice we have set some rules to help us keep the server as lag-free as possible throughout the entire tournament. During the tournament, only one racing server and our mazing survival server will be running along side the tournament and warmup server. The parser will simply record the contents of race_temp.txt (the racing output file) into another text document on our server for future parsing to prevent any glitches or lost times. Remember that you only get 3 chances, and if you die, that's one chance lost! Again, no times or ranks will be revealed at the end of each race, the parser will merely record them to a file. Please DO NOT bug administrators about looking up your times, we will ignore you and if you persist, we have no problem disqualifying you from the tournament. This is our little way of keeping you on your toes until the end. So what, we like suspense. :D

In the event of a tie:
We hate ties, they're so uncomfortable around your neck. But if we get one, we will follow this process for determining the winner. We will try each step, if a step fails, move on to the next.
1. Whoever completed the most races (you know, without dying). This will be calculated as a percentage of total number of attempts (so 1 of 1 will win over 2 of 3).
2. Add up all their times for each map, whoever has the lowest total time.
3. If it is for 1st place: Hold a final round at the time and convenience of both users. A random map will be selected with respawn_time set to 0. First person to complete the map wins.
3. If it is not for 1st place: Oh well, it will end in a tie.

How you win:
Get the best times for each map. At the end of the tournament, all of the scores will be written to a database and will be run through a system similar to our current racing ladder system to assign each player a points value.

Prizes:
Umm, well I don't have a job so I can't really afford prizes but if anyone wants to hand anything out, message me and I'll add it up.

How to register:
No need, just show up and race and all of your times will be recorded! No pre-registration required.

When does it start:
The tournament is currently set to begin on Tuesday, September 21, 2010.

If you think I've left anything out, let me know so I can add it. Questions, comments, please. :D

Great idea. I have one question: who is 'we' in your post? Well I know it is you and the admins but who are these 'organizers' (names)?

Fishy (Aero:ff) helped me brainstorm all the ideas. The 'we' just refers to me, Sammy, and Tanner. I'll be talking to them to choose maps/get suggestions, but they will not be aware of the final map selections or orders so they don't have to deal with the people bugging them for answers. :)

I hope (and expect) all of my staff will report any incidents that might interfere with this tournament, although I've tried to set it up so that those incidents don't occur in the first place.

I see...well maybe Tanner will take a bribe. (:

-will you be using maps currently run on any of your servers?
-if you are letting people have unlimited practices at the maps, or they are ones that are already available for play, then it's a memory game, not racing.
-Either way I'll be participating, but it's a shame to see what racing has become in some people's eyes.

I have to disagree there. It wouldn't be just a Memory Game. Yes, you will remember the shortcuts or best Paths, but there are other Factors in racing like sharping, slides etc.

I cannot discuss those details :>

Yes, well I see this very similar to any other game mode. You practice practice practice to get perfect at something before the big competition. Shortcuts are only a factor in the game and taking the risks at the shortcuts could result in you dying, which uses up one of your turns. If you die all 3 times, then you don't have a time for that map at all (0 points). Who knows, maybe we'll be posting images with common paths drawn out.

One question: why wait a month? I'm excited even though I rarely race :D

I didn't want it to feel rushed and I wasn't sure if I'd be available to change the maps at the beginning of September.

Will you get it to record times when only 1 person is in the server?
because right now, it does not. Therefore, one could theoretically get infinite practice time at the right time of day. (ok, not infinite.)

Ok, but why did I add this signature? I was like 15 and thought I was smart? What a brat.

Cosmic! Did you read it? lol
1) There will already be a warmup server where you can get as much practice as you want on the map.
2) It says my account will be connected 24/7 to make sure it always records the times. It'll be connected from my PC because my wireless goes out frequently.

UPDATE
I will be modifying the maps that are used in the tournament to only have 1 spawn point so everyone starts at the same spot.

I went to the server, raced once, died, raced a second time, completed it with 60 seconds left, and the server parser reset, then raced a third time and died. For some reason, I was able to continue without being kicked or anything.

I had a similar problem as deso.

I died the first time, completed the second, and died the third, but then the server let me try it a fourth time. I immediately drove myself into a death zone and left the server, but I think that you either need to fix the problem soon, or take out the three-try rule. Because people who haven't heard of this post and the rules would have an unfair advantage over those who have.
