Fortress Cafe is open for business!

Post by compguygene »

Today, when I went to play in G5's Megafortress, I mentioned that my favorite lunch to eat is Fortress! 5 or 6 people joined in and expressed how much they missed Fortress Cafe! So, I asked how people would feel about me bringing back the server that taught me to play Fortress, hosted in the UK on the same server that the Fort.eu pickup server is on. People were very excited by the idea! However, out of respect to Epsy and Wrtlpnfrt who ran that server, I wanted to give a shoutout and offer to let Epsy just go ahead and do it, if he so desires. If Epsy, et al do NOT want to put up a Fortress Cafe, I am asking if the community would like me to bring it back, and If the original owners would be offended. I am more than willing to let the original owners run it, or whatever.....I just would like to bring back Fortress Cafe under its original name, etc.

If it has anything different to offer than the existing servers, e.g. an 8vs8 player max. hooray!

I was thinking 8v8 with MAX_CLIENTS 20. SCORE_HOLE 1, and 2v2 conquerable, just like Fortress Cafe had. I am also thinking of choosing a mod/admin team, with input from all of you. As the server owner, I will just decide who I think is most capable, and give admin/mod to enough people that responsible mods or admins will be around routinely. The basic policies will be simple:

No excessive swearing or personal attacks.
Let's try to be n00b friendly.
Keep it fun!

So, if you want to be admin or mod, apply here

Many of us learned to play Fortress in Fortress Cafe. I am looking to recreate the same kind of culture! Wanna teach your Sumo buddy Fortress, bring them to Fortress Cafe!

I always wondered where this server went...seems G5 will have some competition when it's back up.

I was mod in the original cafe, does that mean I can get it automatically? :)

Just so you know, I will be pm'ing you all my questions and answers. But so far, I will just say yes, yes, etc. Nobody is a no for any reason I can think of. All I will be pm'ing you is my standard "Guidelines for Server Moderators and Administrators". It's a short document that I have created that let's you know the only conditions that I would ever take away you given status...not a bunch of rules! Basically, be nice, etc. You pm me back that you agree to the terms, I add your global ID.

And Desolate, it's not automatic per se, but I know you, np. The only former Fortress Cafe mods I might not do automatic are ones I don't know. In that case I would just ask you or somebody else or them a question or two. But, to me the idea is to give anybody who wants to help n00bs or Admin for a valid reason the access needed.

Oh yes, another server polluting the list. Well doesn't matter if there are 40 or 41 empty servers.

Akira: Who gives a shit? There is obviously an interested player group in reviving this server which means that at the restart of this server it will be quite busy. If it dies down and is no longer used I am sure that compguygene will remove it and put another active server in its place. The fact that other people have servers hosted that are continuously empty and refuse to change their settings or shut them down as based on the market demand should not deter people from starting up other servers. Sort the servers as you want or bookmark them and the, as you put it, pollution will not be such an issue for you.

Looking forward to Cafe being back up no matter who it is run by. Thanks for taking the initiative and getting the ball rolling either way comp. :)

Of course, no one does, not even I. Just a random cranky post.

In fact, it would be good to have alternative public fortress server, since g5 pro can be quite full at times.

Eh, there are already 6v6 servers so even if G5's is full... but whatever, what harm does it do.

This is the server that taught me how to play fort too; I was always under the impression that it was still around, but simply out of style (ie: fort cafe was "in style", then DS mega was "in", now g5s is "in").

Anyways, if the settings remain the same as the old server, I think it's a fantastic idea to bring it back!
