Basketball didn't always have a shot clock. It was implemented because teams in control of the game would just stall when they had the ball, leading to the other team fouling. It turned into a free-throw shooting contest—boring (you could say the same is true today, but to a lesser extent). IMO, adding a time limit would make the Ladle like Basketball before the shot clock. If there was a setting or game-feature that enforced players to engage and attack rather than stall, I might be for it.

But the consequence implemented from adding the shot clock is the loss of possession. There is no consequence for fortress time limit, the round just becomes null.

:) I got it! Let's just switch to Fort-Onslaught!

But like said earlier, if the time limit was sufficiently high it would rarely come into effect anyway, just like Ladle matches rarely get to 10 rounds. Just think of it as insurance so EU players can get to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Baseball is one of the most boring sports ever, BTW.

or which ever team has more players gets points for holding their base or something like that...if there is the same number of teammates left on both sides...neither team gets the points...that would make losing teams use risky strategies to kill opposing team members.

That would encourage players to hide in a corner.

Btw underwater basket weaving is the highest paid sport, from what I hear ;D

Edit: I can just picture a new default instant changing to /me wanted to download pr0n, but only got a stupid rim hugger instead.

Not a bad idea. Been brought up before.

Relevance? What does money have to do with how boring it is?

I don't think putting up limit_time is a good idea because it doesn't address the true problem of why games are slow now: defenders and sweepers play extra safe. Attackers only play cautiously now because if they play risky and try to enter the opponent's base, they almost certainly will die. By adding a time limit, we are just giving the winning team an extra incentive to play slowly, and even less would happen.

All the money comes from people who watch the game for entertainment reasons and/or advertisement reasons to get money. If so many people didn't watch the sport, there would be no money to pay the players big bucks!! And I don't think millions of people enjoy watching a boring game do they?

Anyway, back on subject; I'm sure after ample testing, this limit_time debate will settle somehow.

Do you really think the only thing that keeps us from massive holing is the 2 points we give the enemy?

Not really sure if I'm for/against changing the scoring, just playing devil's advocate.

Another good point. Am I right in saying the the biggest reason teams "play safe" and draw out the matches is because attacking is too risky in serious competition? If that is so, maybe we should look at the ways we can make attacking pay off better or make losing a zone less devastating.

Here is an insane idea: rather than removing kill points in favor of zone points, could we do the opposite? Reduce the points you get for zones and round wins. Make eliminating your opponent just as important as the zone, or reduce the zone's importance in some way. This might even stimulate play in other parts of the grid, namely the midfield.

Subtopic: "And I don't think millions of people enjoy watching a boring game do they?" Millions of people watch reality TV too. And if money was directly related to how exciting something was, every game you buy for your console is automatically more exciting than Armagetron. Millions of people CAN be wrong.

time limit correctly encourages the losing team to be more aggressive not more conservative. But the time limit has been shown not to work well in fortress, whether it was the FPL matches or the pick-up matches.

I'm glad were considering change settings and all, but let's establish a goal before we go messing about with everything. I think a good goal is to allow for a diversity in strategies (I also think this could be done with current settings, and mostly fault the 15ish teams that don't win each month for not trying new things). The most captivating matches are the ones that pit completely different tactics against each other. Right now, we're mostly using the same weapons.

subtopic: you all are forgetting that soccer is by far the biggest sport this earth has ever bore witness to. Also, I love this concept of subtopic.

Reducing tthe rubber to three would make the rounds alot faster!!

Subtopic: soccer is very boring, but so is basketball. IMO crew is the worst sport to view, and consider a sport. Even Olympic ping pong is better!

Sub-subtopic (get the joke?)

edit: spelling again...
