Doesn't look like a hoax to me.
Also doesn't sound like a real OS, more like a minimal vehicle for running the Chrome browser and not much else. I mean, they claim to be aiming at minimizing loading time. How can you do that? Well, only by not loading stuff. It's thin client all over again. Fine for the intended use, I guess.

I was told it will only work completely once you're connected to the internet, which has a couple of problems in itself.

I simply love almost everything Google comes out with. I for one, am looking forward to the Chrome OS and am sure to try it out.
