I tried the same thing, but I never got a very good mechanical connection from motors to knobs.

Wow, I would have never thought to do that with an etch a sketch, or even know how to.

I was too busy drawing stairs. And houses with bad roofs.

I hooked my etch and sketch up to my dad's two-stroke weed-eater and invented bold type.

The thing on this guys lap is an etch a sketch: http://flickr.com/photos/zen/sets/57482/

You turn the knobs to steer a dot that makes lines. If you're good, you can make fancy pictures.

Here's someone who put motors on it and a joystick control: http://lims.mech.northwestern.edu/~desi ... 03/Team22/

But to really get what an etch-a-sketch is, here's a virtual one: http://www.corporatedump.com/etchsketch.html

You use the arrow keys to steer your dot around. You can see how it's a bit like driving in Armagetron.

I tried doing something *sort of* similar, but not really. I attached motors right on to the etch-a-sketch with mecano like pieces and was trying to drive the original plastic knob directly. It sucked. Had I used a bit more of my brain, I would have replaced the knobs with bigger ones. I had thought of that, but didn't have anything. Today I would build a knob from scratch. Er, I mean today I wouldn't bother!

hmm i've used an etch-a-scetch, makes me wonder if i'm hopelessly old (or very un-norwegian in my life experiences)

anyway does anyone remember the weird psychedelic-like mini-blackboards of strange plastic on which one could use a kind of toothless comb on to get shapes of all kinds of colours depending (probably) on pressure/heat?

anybody know what they were called or have any links?

*staggers from the blast from the past of early 70ies superinnocent childhood* maybe old age dementia won't be so bad after all lol
