Seti-esque armagetron super server, possible?

Post by QUARG »

Would it be possible to use the Seti style super computer software to host? Say i had a dozen computers laying around, would there be a way to get them to work together?

I will tackle this. Seti@home divides a computational problem among many computers to perform a given task. Although it does coordinate many computers across the Internet, they are not taking real-time data that needs immediate processing and putting that information out. An Armagetron server coordinates a slew of real-time data among each of the clients to which it is talking. To divide that task among many would just add to the network bottlenecks, with no real value. Also, a single Armagetron server does not really take up much recourses, in terms of local processing. It does take up significant network bandwidth, which is why a computer, that is a dedicated server in a data center, can run many Armagetron servers. So, a setup like Seti@home would really have no benefit at a cost to the network performance.

Ok keeping what you have just mentioned in mind, why so much delay and lag buildup on a server with high traffic?

that is because of the network code

a list of bandwidth used by servers and number of players

Nice chart, kyle. I can use that to aid in future planning.

Interesting.

And yes, a distributed computing server would be silly. They can't even get stuff like that working for MMORPGs half the time.
