CustomiZe Your appearance

Post by o.O »

I was talking to a friend on tron "minefield" about the new versions commin out for this. We came across how theres goin to be accounts and stuff then i thought it would be cool if the new arma has a customize your bike section. It would be like if u change the pic for your arma tail in your settings but instead of just you seeing it everyone else will.

But it will not be easy to get those tails/lines or cool things on the bike. How about in order to get these cool things you have to have a certain amount of kills, certain ranking in a server or even certain record in a server. i think the amount of kills is a good idea.

If you dont get what i mean think about need for speed.

brakes, suspension, camshafts, induction kits, competition equipment, exhaust boxes and systems, hoses and fittings, lights, lighting accessories, performance products, race and leisure wear, seats, steering wheels

i copied and pasted that but that would be cool.

soppose you decide to go in first person view. instead of just a view of the game how bout that stick they use to drive or some electric stuff to show ur in a bike that moves weird

In the future it might be possible to let other people see your skin, but customization such as you suggest is probably well beyond that even.

That is, if people are in favor of it. (The customization.) I don't think I'd be, to me that doesn't fit very well into what I see as Armagetron.

it would be the same as getting a new color or the 2 colors in the tail but instead you can have like a fire or a cool design on it and everyoone can see it and no u have a good ranking

Oh, so you mean have the tail images already on the server and when you kill so many people your tail image changes?

Hi,

Before anything else, I would like to thank you for your idea, or actually, the level of detail in it. It has become a pet-peeve of mine to first time poster come in with some variation of "it would be sooooo c0000l to let the bike jump, like when you are trapped, you'd be able to free yourself. Also add some gun and boms so we can blow up stuff."

Support for customization has been pretty much accepted as a desirable feature, but nobody seems to have the time to start on that. IIRC, there are basically 3 vision of the thing:
a) Yes it is cool, but I wont use it. I much prefer the uniformised look.
b) Everybody gets to customize their own cycle/cycle texture/trail, allowing you to recognize someone in game
c) the server/map should control the textures (mostly targetted toward walls, but possibly cycle and trails) to complement the atmosphere created by the host.

The last one, despise its sheer intellectual superiority to any other alternative, seems to have a limited group of supporters, consisting of only me. I'm working of a few well phrased slogans that will convert everybody to my side.

If I was to venture a guess, I'd say the equilibrium point will be something along "server/map determine wall textures and give the default model/textures to the players. Individual players override the default by publicising their own prefered textures. All of this can be disable locally by players with lower transfer capacity or simply not desiring to see it".

Sadly, nobody seems to have started on any part of it. I'd say you should seriously consider sponsoring, exhorting, bribing, kidnapping or just plain old convincing some developer to the task, should you decide not to take it onto yourself.

As for the customisation by addition of elements, well it seems to be mostly eye-candy without any impact on the game play. Generally, items that do not drastically contribute to the playing experience tend to be left aside on a project with as limited resouces as ours. I hope you understand.

That said, it is still a pretty neat idea. Now you have to decide what you will do next.

Good luck

I probably simply haven't said it often enough, but I'm with you there. Player selected customizations have the usual problems: invisible walls and bikes, offensive content. They should definitely be off by default. I think I wrote a post about the possibilities here that should be selectable, but it wasn't really that ingenious, I think something along the lines of
- Display only conetent as selected on the client (what we have now)
- Allow server selected content
- Allow server selected content and a limited set of exceptions set by the server
- Allow all content

I'm not too hot about the idea of giving players visual upgrades for achievements. One of the things I like is that on any server, you have to earn the respect of the other players every time anew. It would be very hard, if not impossible, to come up with a global ranking system that isn't corruptible. Server specific rankings could work, as well as achievements. Most things I come up with don't measure your skill, though, but rather the product of skill and time investment, or the motivation to cheat to get them.

About the layers of security, I recently started to think about the following:
a) local data only, irrelevantly of if it is the default or user added
b) AA's repository only. It suppose that all posted data is first quarantined, and that some moderators either approve (thus making it available for download) or reject it.
c) All open

I didnt really think about the possibility of players injecting resource when I came with this model, but I dont see why I could trust more Bobs' quasy generic server more than Bob himself! It is debatable as a system, but it EXTREMELY simple for a user to administer.

Yeah, what z-man said.

We've got to have some work done on the resource system first. I'm back working on acme right now, intending to use it to prototype new resource files and build them with the hope that I'll hit up the resource system directly pretty soon. (the sound engine is mostly blocked by the resource system, since it needs resources that include multiple files) But I had to digress and rebuild my server when the hard drive my dad sent me finally arrived...

Customize bikes for sponsored logos, like any other racing/ derby event; then get REAL Promoters; and make it an event.
