dedicated server on windows

Post by Code hunter »

I wanted to set up a server on my computer that is dedicated and stays online at all times. Therfore, i have a few questions.

Question 1: I want this server, everytime windows is started up, to automatically start. How am i to do this?

Question 2: I want the "dos" screen to not be viewable and hidden when the computer is turned on. I don't want it to be seen anywhere on the computer desktop.

The reason for this is that it is a office computer at work, and i don't want them to be able to delete it ;) i have wanted my own dedicated server for a while.

Thanks in advance!

You need something like firedaemon.
This will allow you to run most applications as a service. Then simply tell windows to automatically run this service at startup.

Never tried to run armagetron on windows in this way. But I can vouch for firedaemon doing similar things for me.

You know, that's probably illegal and could get you fired...

NOt illegal, just a misuse of company resources. Depending on the company, they may be ok with it if you're otherwise a good person. Which means code hunter's screwed, of course.

well for starters, put it in the startup folder. as for the rest i have to say that youd be violating employee internet usage contract.

Overruling the company's decision on company property isn't? Keep in mind that he "don't want them to be able to delete it".

Show me the law that says that employees can't run game servers on company computers. :)

Ah, see, there's the rub. He might be violating a contract, but that's not illegal. Contracts just assign liability when an agreement is broken. He might be breaking rules at the company, but that's not illegal either. See, illegal means "against the law", as in "some cop will come and arrest you if you do it". There is some illegal that only gets a citation, from a cop. But always from a cop.

It's not illegal to run stop signs in parking lots unless the sign leads to the street. That doesn't mean the company can't fine you and refuse to serve you until you pay the fine. It is, however, dumb, unless you're totally aware you're not going to hit somebody.

It's also not illegal to take the company car down to the store to buy a pack of smokes. You might get fired for it, even if you put gas in it while you're there, but it's not illegal.

It's also not illegal to use the company's pen and paper to write your wife a love letter. I know I've done it before (written your wife a love letter), but it's not illegal. You might get fired for it, you might get some other sort of reprimand, but it's not illegal.

And as to "make it so they can't delete it", that's just more of his 10 PRINT "Hello, World!" I'm a programmer mentality. He doesn't know what he's talking about. :)

Just because it's not a criminal offense doesn't mean it's legal...

Ummm, yes it does. Jailable and criminal are different things. You can get cited and fined for failing to follow building codes because you broke the law. Just because you don't get tossed into jail doesn't mean you haven't committed a criminal offense. Of course, now I've given like 4 examples and you've given none, other than code hunter's original post (he's in australia anyway, so american law doesn't apply). So I'll wait for you to put up or shut up again.

Ed answered your question. You need some extra program to make it run as a service. You can google for more if you don't like the one he linked...
